Question Steering position sensor EVO

I need some help with the steerins wheel position sensor which appears to be the problem that I have with my 99 chevy Tahoe. When I turn to the left at about 11:00 o'clock position the wheel feels like I hit a patch of ice, then resumes back to normal. I have ordered the part but need to locate the sensor. Any tips will be greatly apprechiated. Any resource will help.

Steering Wheel Position Sensor Replacement
Removal Procedure
Set the front wheels in the straight-ahead position. Set the steering wheel in the LOCKED position.

Caution
Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR). Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
Remove the nut and the bolt from the upper to the lower steering shaft connection. Slide the lower shaft down.
Remove the position sensor connector by using a suitable tool in order to pull the connector down around the right side of the steering column for accessibility.

Important
Do not apply force to the sensor and the bearing in a sideways direction.

Remove the position sensor and bearing assembly from the steering column jacket by pulling the assembly straight out.
Remove the position sensor from the clips in the bearing assembly.
Installation Procedure
Install the position sensor into the bearing assembly.
Install the bearing into the steering column jacket.
Align the notches on the bearing and the column jacket.

Important
Do not apply force to the sensor and the bearing in a sideways direction.

Seat the bearing fulling into the jacket.
Connect the position sensor connector.

Notice
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Install the bolt and the nut to the upper end of the shaft. Tighten
Tighten the nut to 62 N·m (46 lb ft).

Connect the negative battery cable.
Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.

Sensor

Ah, my first post. I have had the same problem with my 97 chevy K1500. I want to recommend calling Chevy and complaining about the part. They issued a "technical bullitin" and made a better part. Even though they admit the first part is crap, they still charge 20 dollars more for the better part.

The problem has been solved thanks to the help of automotive forums!
Trust me the local chevy dealership got a mouthful from me. The know of the problem and they had no answer. "not enough complaints to make a service bullitin" I have read all over that this seems to be a problem. for now i replaced it.. thanks

Thanks for real troubleshooting

Thanks to everyone in this thread. I had spent nearly $1000 here in East Hamton with some guy who is more concerned with his Mercedes, BMW, Porsche & Rolls customer. He replaced the steering box, wanted to repalce the pump (rebuilt it instead). Thank god my in-laws own a large salvage yard (they weren't even aware of this common problem). The job took 30 minutes, with 15 minutes required to get the foam off of the connector.

Be sure to disconnect the battery, lock the steering column and leave it locked until you're finished. One (1) 15mm socket & ratchet, a flashlight, and small fingers is all you need.

I worked my way through college working on cars (30 years ago), but don't do it anymore. I've just had no luck with dealers or *reputable* shops.

Thumbs up Worked on mine

Thanks for the great instructions John.

I had the same problem with my 97 Tahoe and I was able to fix it in about an hour. The Chevy dealer wanted 62 for the part. Same part from GMC was 68. I guess it pays to shop.

Re: Re: Steering position sensor EVO

I have a '98 with Sub. with the same problem. I have now problem with repairs, however I am concerned about the Airbags, as it would be costly if I "blow them". Did any of you have issue with that when you did this repair?

Thanks, Bob

Re: Steering position sensor EVO

I have a 1998 C1500 that has the same problem that others have experienced
when turning out of a parking space with the wheel turned to the left, the front tire acts like it is on ice.

What is the correct part number for the EVO sensor?

I have seen others recommend Gm part # 26064468 ...is this the correct part?

Thanks

Re: Steering position sensor EVO

I replaced mine a couple weeks ago. I took my VIN# to the dealer
to get the part.($70) I unhooked battery and let set for half hour. My
understanding is this is enough to disable airbags. At an easy pace
it took an hour. Only prob. I had was trying to push in the sensor
without the wiring being in the wiring slot and the steering shaft
turning a little and not lining up until it occurred to me to unlock
column. If I can do this job, anybody can. Steering great now.
Good Luck. I have pictures of the job but I can't figure out how to post.

shortbus, I am getting a dead spot in my steering between 11 and 1 oclock n the wheel, seems to be the worst at speeds of 40 - 55 mph. do you think replacing this sensor would fix this problem.

would just installing a steering damper ing the front suspension take care of the problem instead of replacing the EVO?
