I was thinking about putting a electronic ignition on my 1996 chevy 1500 with a v8 in it. I was just wondering if this would be bennificial to me and what could I expect from doing this thanks

back in 1975 GM started with electronic ignition. electronic components created the control for spark out of the coil.

the elimination of points in the distributor in 1975 helped reduce pollution , and increase the MPG with longer life and reliability.

repairshops lost work with this change. points only lasted 10-12,ooomiles.

you have a pre 1975 motor ?

Re: is a electronic ignition better??

Are you talking about an aftermarket ignition, like an MSD or something of the sorts?

You will gain nothing. Absolutely nothing if that's all you're doing to a stock 350.

Actually, '75 is when HEI was standard equipment in practically everything GM made. It was standard equipment on select vehicles for '74.

GM had optional (extra-cost) Transistor Ignition starting about '66; but it's a very rare option.

post exactly what conversion kits your talking about .

your vehicles ignition has an ignition control module. there are some that today are made with a better performance ,than was available when your vehicle was built. as these modules get old they no longer control the timing and spark correctly.
