Sitting car wont start
ok, my car has been sitting in the garage for almost 2 years now. I left it with a 1/4 tank of gas without putting fuel stabilizer in it. Now that its time to get the car back out I bought a brand new battery (the last one wouldnt hold a charge), oil and filter, and some Lucas injector cleaner to add with some fresh gas in hopes that it mixes with the old and turns. well I did that and when i turn the key it just keeps turning. It doesn't fire or turn over. So now i wonder if its a fuel pump or ignition problem. HELP!

2000 Ford Mustang 3.8L
We're getting spark from the plugs but they dont smell like fuel. Thinking its a fuel pump problem. I will turn the key for a good 15 seconds but it never even gets close to starting. |

1) Is there any fuel at the rail?
2) Did you try some starting fluid? If no fuel at the rail, check the fuel pump fuse, fuel pump relay, and fuel filter. |

There is no fuel at the rail. I'm not getting any pressure from the fuel tank. I'm beginning to think its either the fuel pump or the FPDM module. Is there a way I can test to see if the fuel pump is getting power? If it is the fuel pump that went out, is it difficult to replace?

Short out the fuel pump with 12V power. If you hear it run, it should be working and you should check into the relay or other electrical components relating to the pump. If not, you need a new fuel pump.

Update. So today we replaced the fuel filter and when we took the fuel lines off we only had a few drops of gas spit out. I left the line off from the tank to the filter off and tried to turn it to see if gas would spit out. It didnt. After which we unplugged the FPDM and bridged the + and - to see if we could get the pump to work and nada. My friend who drives an '01 GT decided we should take his module, which were exactly the same, plug it into mine and see if I had a faulty FPDM. We did so and still nothing. To me this points all signs to a dead fuel pump. What do you guys think? Is there something I'm overlooking?

I would still verify it's not faulty wiring harness by applying 12V directly to the fuel pump. If you have a spare car battery sitting around it shouldn't take you more than a few minutes.

Yeah that sounds like a good idea. The plan is to drop the tank and remove the fuel pump and then we'll apply the power to it and see if we cant hear it try to kick on. If not then its time for a new one.
