Does is start whining as soon as you turn the car on in park? Or just when you are driving? It could be the belt...might want to ckeck that out. Mine whines all the time too...lol.. but thats just the supercharger.

Re: Car makes whining sound..

Hmmm... 143K? Whining to me could be early sign of alternator bearing or brush failure. Mine did just that and I did not wait for failure on the road. For the fun of it, I took the armature out and looked at the brushes--unbelieveably, one brush was so worn down that it started a groove into the armature pickup. If you have not replaced the alternator, I would check that. Other whining objects include--water pump; power steering and maybe the AC clutch in many cars. I have the belief that a car will many times give you early warning if you listen well.

Re: Car makes whining sound..

whining is normally a power steering pump or alternator. A water pump or a/c clutch will normally make a grinding/scraping noise. You can determine if it's a belt driven accessory by removing the serp belt and starting the car. If the noise is still there, you have bigger problems (possible trans/torque converter). If the noise goes away, you know it's a belt driven accessory or idler/tensioner pulley, then it's just a matter of tracking it down.

Re: Car makes whining sound..

Use either an old piece of hose or broom stick and stick one end on your ear and the other end on various parts of the engine (alternator, water pump, pully, etc). The length needs to be 2 to 3 feet long. It is an old trick and will really help to pin down where the sound is coming from. Just don't put it on any moving parts!!!

Re: Car makes whining sound..

Sounds like a trans issue, and that's not good.

I would fix the vacumn leak and see if the whining goes away.

Re: Car makes whining sound..

I have the same sound and I am in desperate need of any advice on my noise issue. I have a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP. I love this car but it has a TERRIBLE whining noise that no one in Memphis can seem to diagnose. When I push on the gas and the rpm's increase, there is a loud whining noise that will increase in pitch and loudness as the rpm;s increase. When I take my foot off the gas, the noise disappears and it also does not happen when in neutral? I just had the transmission rebuilt at a local Aamco (not for this reason)and the alternator replaced and they say it is not transmission related. Someone please give me ideas that I can take to my mechanic. He is at a loss as is the dealership. The noise seems to be coming from the drivers side but I am not for sure?
My email is gaylordk@comcast.net Thanks, this is my first time posting.

Re: Car makes whining sound..

I periodically get a whining sound in my 00 GTP and have found it is my power steering. Adding power steering fluid makes it go away. The power steering reservoir is located between the alternator and the firewall, about 1 foot down. You'll need a long neck funnel to add fluid.

"I just had the transmission rebuilt at a local Aamco (not for this reason)and the alternator replaced and they say it is not transmission related."

Sorry to tell you I had the same issue after Aamco rebuilt my Tranny, told me it was the superchargers waste gate, and wouldn't listen to me when I told it it never made that noise.

I had the transmission rebuilt again, after Aamco's 3rd rebuilt failed and they refused to cover it/rebuild it. Guess what, the noise does not exist anmore, but the mechanic told me it looked like someone dropped a nade int he tranny, Overdrive ring snapped in half. But now I am getting a wierd hesitation, almost like a hiccup while driving. I am thinking it's a fouled fuel injector. I am hoping it's not the transmission again!

Also, for finding noise, a long screw driver works well, where a broom handle does not fit... P.S. do they still make brooms??? Don't u own a swifter??? :P

Good Luck!
