1997 Lesabre Intake Exploded - UIM & LIM replace

I have a 97 Lesabre that the intake exploded due to a backfire from the faulty fuel regulator that was never recalled. I figured that as long as I am in there repairing the plenum, I might as well do the UIM and LIM gasket update as well. I was wondering which is the prefered upper plenum and gasket set to purchase? Is the Dorman a good one or should I go with another one others have used? Also, I see Dorman has a kit with the gaskets included but is there a better "kit" with all the components available? I also have heard of others replacing the lower intake manifold for a new one as well and was wondering if that is needed. If someone could share part numbers and any tricks in doing the LIM UIM update I would a appreciate it!!!!

I think the other one is better then the Doorman. I thought the doorman was just an intake, where the other one is a kit, with the Intake and a smaller stove stove pipe that solves the problem.

Many, many people have been happy with the Doorman tho.

Maybe the Doorman comes with the stove pipe also? You probable can't go wrong with ether one.

Chris.

Re: 1997 Lesabre Intake Exploded - UIM & LIM replace

I ended up buying the APN kit and it was not too bad in price... it was $107 shipped to my door via FedEx. The way it sounds it has every thing I need except the LIM gasket and water elbow. What are the thoughts on the LIM gaskets and water elbow? Go right to GM for the both of them or get the Fel-Pro gaskets and the "HELP" elbow. If anyone has part numbers to the ones they used it would be a great help. Also I was wondering if there was a way of telling if I need the "pinned" LIM gaskets or unpinned? Everyone has been such a wealth of information in helping me out and I appreciate it very much!!!! THANKS!!

The APN intake has a heat shield that should prevent any detioration of the intake from EGR gases. It is highly recommended by many.

You can get the elbow at most auto parts stores. Even tho GM "updated" the gaskets, I chose Fel-pro gaskets since GM gave me bad gaskets to begin with, why go back?

I'm not sure if Fel-pro now has the aluminum style gaskets or not now. Everyone I've heard from hasn't had any further trouble with the GM aluminum gaskets. The new style GM intake is another story. I have heard some are experiencing upper intake failures with the new style GM intake, but not with the APN shielded intake.

On a tangent, does anyone know if the 2000-2005 intakes suffered from the same egr problem????

Yes they do, but, "not as much."
I think people say, "not as much" is because not as many years has gone by as older ones.

I can't say for sure on a 2005. That new may be new enough not to have to worry about it.

GM switched back to an aluminum intake at some point. Check your 2005 and see if it's the plastic or aluminum.
