I know on my 2000 that there's two switches under the driver's dash that rest up against the brake pedal. One turns the brake lights on and the other turns off the cruise control. I think that the cruise switch also controls the center-light on the trunk lid. So if your left/right brake lights work but the center one doesn't, it could be that switch. The contacts get dirty, don't make contact, and the car thinks you've stepped on the brakes, so it turns off the cruise control. I recently had to take mine out and clean the contacts; put it back in and cruise was back to working. You'll have to lay on your back and stick your head under there to get a good look.
