Mass-produced model cars are made mainly of styrene plastic. They include some minor parts made of other types of plastic, like calcium carbonate. Companies like Revell, Tamiya, Fujimi and Monogram make styrene models. Most are made in Japan.

Short-run production models, and cars in 1/43 scale, are made of cast epoxy resin. Many of these are handmade in Europe. They often include metal parts.

Modelers use putty of various kinds to fix defects and to customize cars.
