Biggest bang for your buck performance-wise is to enhance the air flow in and out. You mention it has dual exhaust. Does it still have the stock exhaust manifolds? If not, headers would be the first and best upgrade.
As far as taking air in, the stock intake is pretty good. I would just add a K&N air filter.
The 4th gen SS's (83-88) all came with a 305v8 (L69) except for those made in Mexico. So your engine has been replaced, which could be a good thing. Grab the casting #'s off the engine block and heads and that will let you determine where to go from there.
