I would trade the mesh you have in the hood for some HO scale rail road chain link fence. It is actually made just like the mesh that you would use on a real car (expanded metal) and the holes are considerably smaller.
on the left top you see the HO scale "fence", top right is detail master photo etched mesh with it's octagonal holes,and in front you see the tamiya mesh.
