I had a similar problem with 2001 Pontiac Montana.
Ran and shifted fine for quite a while (variable), but would start whining and also would shift hard when whining.

Replaced the Transmission filter & fluid (which was pretty dirty but not burnt), and this seems to have fixed the problem.
