Sounds like your friend didn't match his components to his needs. If he wanted to raise and lower it all the time, he should have opted for a larger tank with a more powerful compressor.

There's a guy on this forum with an air ride suspension on his civic, and as I recall he's pretty happy with it. Just do a search for air ride suspensions, and you'll find a couple threads on 'em.
