This is an old topic, but for anyone else wondering about this, Im not sure if the Mazda3 and the Focus is the same, but from me driving my Mazda3 daily, I have never had one problem shifting into 5th gear. This is by far the easiest car to shift gears into. I also have a Suzuki Aerio and a S10 and those are harder to shift gears into. Hope this helps.
