Type R..... Not really worth it. Well depending on what this individual wishes to do with his car, it may not be worth it.
GS-R Engine, Hydro Tranny, ECU: about $4000 completley installed from a decent shop. Probably the best Honda/Acura engine for both its power, price, and upgradeabiltiy.
Type-R Engine only: Around $5G's. Not to mention the Tranny, ECU, and Installation. The Type-R Engine is obviously very rare and sought after, which makes the price ludicrous. However, it is an extremely well-built and very powerful engine. Combined with a Type-R manifold and the other basics, you would have a respectable machine. But the downside is that the Type-R gets its awesome power and efficiency from it's huge compression ratio. 12.5:1 I believe. This makes it almost impossible to turbocharge or supercharge without going completley race fuel. Even then you would worry about detonation. Of course you can always get low compression pistons, but if your friend wants to go through that too, then its a good choice.
So if your friend can throw money around, then go Type-R with low-compression pistons. If he's limited (and smart) then he should probly get the entire GS-R swap for $4k and still be able to go forced induction.
