The only reason the AE86 was used is because it is an excellent car for most motorsport and was very cheap, but ever since the show was released on Australia the price of them is so high, even for the Australian delivered 85 it really pisses me off because I wanted one long before Initial D became a TV show
The other reason it was used is its the car that turned drifting into a sport because Keiichi Tsuchiya started to drift his 86 through downhill corners in race competition to carry extra speed and Taks technique is Keiichi's as a driver they are supposed to be the same, Keiichi also makes a small cameo on Initial D, in series 1.
