OK, Lotus, here are my guesses...
Location, location, location. First of all its a packaging help. You can fit more brakes, wheel, tire, and suspension engineering in a space that doesn't have to be shared by a spring and shock.
Adjustabilty. Since the suspension transfers the load via a lever to the springs and shocks you can easily change spring rate by altering the lever.
Unsprung weight. Moving those suspension components inboard, their weights are no longer carried by the lower control arm.
