Seems like I remember some issue with the pigtail for the oil sender wiring going bad on some GM's of that general era, but I can't remember what the issue was. I do know I replaced a few of them.
With three leads, it's gonna be shunting the correct two together to get a light, I would think. Trying to remember why there's three wires. One is all you need for a light, unless you've got a low pressure interlock to shut down ignition or fuel if pressure falls.
