It seems to me like only rear-wheel drive cars (with front mounted engine) should have this. WTF>?!
It's there for two reasons....

First, a middle hump adds a great deal to structural rigidity. Without the hump the chassis flex would be tremendous.

Second, that is where your exhaust runs. Convenient.
