That's my biggest worry.

I'm sure they're very useful, but I've cracked alot of lenses on my vehicles, and would worry about something on the undercarrage.

One thing to think about is brush and small shrubs.
I doubt a rock could worm its way into a light without hitting somwthing else first. But the sagebrush here in Utah can be pretty bad on less used trails.
My friend ABS wire ripped off once by a 2.5ft tall shrub growing in the middle of a trail. And it was protected by his lower control arm!

Anything that stays under the vehicle needs to be well protected.
Mobycat's idea of a magnetic light would be good enough for me.
