Of course there are ringers and lemons that come out of the factory - but having tested these cars against each other for so many years these magazines like Car and Driver, Motor Trend, etc... came to this conculsion every time.
Now, you throw a much more expensive 245 HP Cobra into this situation and it changes things - but I think I remember the Cobra not even being as fast as the Chevy 350 either (if it was, not by much).
Fact is having grown up driving around in 5.0L's & IROC's, the Mustang's simply couldn't hook as well as the Camaro's. The suspension all around in the Stang's was pretty wanting, and although I can't say that a Z28's was that much better - the performance suspension upgrades in the IROC-Z's and WS-6 Trans-Am GTA's were simply awesome for their time.
And whichever dude said he hunts down LT1 F-bodies in his two stock 5.0L Stang's is either SO full of shit, or 1 in a billion - cause he managed to get 2! (TWO!) ringers from the factory! Its not impossible - my old nieghbour had an automatic '96 LT1 Collector's Vette (no LT4 with the auto's) and this fucking thing ran mid 13's at the track (13.6's) right from the factory, everytime! (with no tire pressure tweaking, launcing, anything!)
Otherwise, don't be giving other fella's with stock 5.0L's (even slightly modded ones) false hope - cause they're no match for the LT1.
P.S - I still love old 5.0L's and IROC's, they are the ones that got me into this shit!

I have raced IROC,Z28, GTA, and all of them stock from the Factory have not beat my stock 87 GT. My is by no means a factory freak I wish it was.
But I i totally admit a LT1/LS1 would eat my stock GT up. Hence why it isnt staying stock
