I just joined the AF and discovered I am the last person who hasn't fixed the odometer resistor. Could someone repost a link to photo-instructions of the repair? Is there another choice for a replacement resistor or do I need the NAISSO part kit?

how many miles on your ride ? now you have this problem ?

this happened to me in 1998, my 1996 impala had 25,ooomi.. odometer would dim and come back...followed instructions and now 2010 60,ooomi looks good..

this is one of the easy jobs I have done on my vehicle...

you simply remove the dash panel a few screws and the connector and on the back of the panel you will see those resistors...all that is needed is to resolder these resistors....use a small 25W soldering iron and some very small electronic solder and its done ....

took 45 min to do....

My vehicle was under warr back in 1998 but dealer said it would take 1 week plus RMV paper work for odometer ...thanks to the internet info this saved me a lot of inconvenience...

had to do this soldering on my 2000 silverado 4X4 select switch ....jose needs to go back to soldering school ....made in mexico !

About 120K miles -- haven't seen the reading for a while. Odo still lights up slightly once a year or so, for special occasions. It has been gone for 8 or 9 years. I just accepted it. Security key fault warning light is on, check engine is posting a PO410 from the AIR pump. Guess I have all kinds of things to touch up now I that I joined the AF and found out it wasn't all unique to my car.

the odometer sounds like the exact failure I had in 1998...its no big deal ...but make sure you can solder correctly ...practice first on something ...

on the security lt you need a new key as the key resistor is worn ...go to lock smith cheaper ....

on your air pump replace the 2 check valves , then replace the air pump because its damaged from the water/exhuast entering it ...then with MAF cleaner by CRC carefully clean the sensor wires ....

now you should be good to go ...

So, I take it you'd have to buy a new resistor, correct? It sounds below like you just need to resolder the existing resistor. But I doubt the solder is bad, or would it work at all? I guess I'm not an electrician. Does this resistor only control the dimming function? Cause my theory was when I turned my knob to brighten and dim it, it should do just that... but it doesn't. I thought it was thinking my lights were on. But it doesn't. It just is dim. My radio seems dimmer than normal too... not sure if that's my imagination.

So, does anyone have a picture of exactly what I need to do? I know you all say it's easy... but I like to know exactly what I'm doing before I tare the dash apart.

One other question... I'm just noticing this forum is for 96 and 98 cars. I have a 2004 Impala LS. Does this forum apply to me? Both my odometer and radio seem very dim. To be honest, I had an after market radio in my car from brand new to about 80,000 miles. Then the after market radio starting having problems. I bought another factory radio and put it in. That is when I started to notice the dim odometer and radio. Granted, my old after market radio wasn't controlled at all by the car, so I wouldn't had noticed a problem if it was in the car. I wasn't sure if I could've done something wrong putting the radio back in to cause this. The radio install was simple. I just had to remove a wiring harness the shop put in when installing my factory radio, then plug it right back into the factory radio. I had to take it to the dealer for them to remove the anti-theft. It was such a simple installation, I doubt that caused the issue or I could've wired something wrong.

The only thing semi-tricky about the removal was the stereo shop had a module in place that was making my steering wheel controls work with the after market radio. But with my factory radio back in place, that didn't work anymore. All I had to do was remove the module because it was interfering with the resistance of the two wires coming from the factory steering wheel controls. Now that works perfect. The only complaint I have is the dimness of the odometer and the radio. And I'm not sure if the radio is dim or not... but I sure do know the odometer is.

the post that I replied to I made an error on the year it is a 1996 not 1998...

as you know GM did not make any impala's of any body type in this year....I will correct this error I made to show 1996...

your issue should be directed to the 2000 on up impala forum..
