Thank you Stevensky, Entau, Tommy, Yes Man, Jagar, Justin, OliVTEC, Alex, Viccario, Rob, Bill, Phil, drunken monkey, Cesar and das_auto for such great comments, I really feel so flattered, I’m glad you like it.
how long did you take to open the glass window?Cutting with the paper discs and the mototool is very quick, using the saw in the corners a little more, but what took a little more time was removing the unwanted material and sanding to adjust, it took me may be 1 hour and a half total.
Haha, Ramon, good thing that you decided to stop playing these video games and get back to model building, lol!No I didn’t LOL, well, not at all, just a little, that is why this car took me so long, it’s been almost two years that I have not finished a car (shame on me) But at least I decided to reduce considerably the time I spend (or waste) with the video games, I really want to build more, and you guys motivate me a lot!!!!
And well, onto the works…
Body Detailing and painting process…
It is turn of the body details, starting with the Ferrari crests which require some bending to match the fender shape, in the picture, at the left, the badge straight from the fret and at the right the badge bent to shape…
http://images23.fotki.com/v868/photos/8/113398/7448438/091015Ferrari59903-vi.jpg
Then the adjustment of the headlamp covers to make them fit flush with the body…
http://images52.fotki.com/v639/photos/8/113398/7448438/091017Ferrari59902-vi.jpg
The adjusted headlamp cover…
http://images17.fotki.com/v319/photos/8/113398/7448438/091017Ferrari59903-vi.jpg
The headlamps require some work too; first the removal of the chrome with “Easy Off” oven cleaner, then the lamp receptacle is removed because this part is way too simple and the real one has three diameters, so it will be replaced by a machined aluminum one (This will be done latter)…
http://images53.fotki.com/v420/photos/8/113398/7448438/091017Ferrari59904-vi.jpg
http://images52.fotki.com/v644/photos/8/113398/7448438/091017Ferrari59905-vi.jpg
It is turn now of the hood which requires the removal of ejector marks, correction of the air intakes (they were smaller) to adjust the PE grills, addition of hinges supports and the hood closing striker…
http://images54.fotki.com/v563/photos/8/113398/7448438/091017Ferrari59906-vi.jpg
The front grill from “Crazy Modeler”…
http://images53.fotki.com/v1578/photos/8/113398/7448438/091017Ferrari59907-vi.jpg
The separated parts; the outer frame is bent to match the body shape…
http://images52.fotki.com/v639/photos/8/113398/7448438/091017Ferrari59908-vi.jpg
Ready for paint …
http://images54.fotki.com/v563/photos/8/113398/7448438/091017Ferrari59909-vi.jpg
The “Crazy Modeler” PE kit includes the seatbelt buckles; some plastic is added to make them solid…
http://images53.fotki.com/v432/photos/8/113398/7448438/091017Ferrari59910-vi.jpg
I had to go back to the interiors because I forgot to detail the steering wheel, steering column and shift pads.
The steering column just requires the addition of the key cylinder lock, the shift pads just some sanding (I won’t use the PE parts here because they are too thin) and the steering wheel requires the correction of the “Manettino” which is too small, so, some plastic was added, the “Manettino” will be scratchbuilt latter, a perforation was made for the starting button as well…
http://images43.fotki.com/v1324/photos/8/113398/7448438/091017Ferrari59911-vi.jpg
With this, all the modifications and scratchbuilding is finished, so it is time to start the painting process which begins with the preparation of parts…
The first parts to prepare are the interior ones because of all the carbon fiber decaling they require, so, patterns are made with masking tape for dashboard, door panels and seats…
http://images26.fotki.com/v891/photos/8/113398/7448438/091017Ferrari59912-vi.jpg
http://images52.fotki.com/v738/photos/8/113398/7448438/091021Ferrari59904-vi.jpg
The parts are washed and sorted by color…
http://images54.fotki.com/v555/photos/8/113398/7448438/091018Ferrari59901-vi.jpg
The body is mounted and ready for primer…
http://images22.fotki.com/v838/photos/8/113398/7448438/091018Ferrari59902-vi.jpg
The first coats of primer are applied (Tamiya though airbrush)…
http://images49.fotki.com/v1519/photos/8/113398/7448438/091018Ferrari59903-vi.jpg
Don’t forget to protect your lungs…
http://images53.fotki.com/v432/photos/8/113398/7448438/091018Ferrari59905-vi.jpg
http://images34.fotki.com/v1149/photos/8/113398/7448438/091018Ferrari59904-vi.jpg
The first round of paint, then some masking and to the second round…
http://images54.fotki.com/v563/photos/8/113398/7448438/091019Ferrari59901-vi.jpg
Some sanding to find and remove any imperfection in the body parts…
http://images53.fotki.com/v420/photos/8/113398/7448438/091020Ferrari59901-vi.jpg
http://images52.fotki.com/v738/photos/8/113398/7448438/091020Ferrari59902-vi.jpg
The body required just minor corrections…
http://images41.fotki.com/v305/photos/8/113398/7448438/091020Ferrari59903-vi.jpg
This step is repeated until no more imperfections appear and then the last coat of primer…
http://images54.fotki.com/v556/photos/8/113398/7448438/091020Ferrari59904-vi.jpg
The color for this car is Black, so the first mist coat of Tamiya TS-14 is applied through airbrush to the body parts as well as to the Hamann aerodynamic elements which later will be covered with carbon fiber decals…
http://images52.fotki.com/v638/photos/8/113398/7448438/091020Ferrari59905-vi.jpg
Some dust in the left fender and a bad paint application on the right side and the top, required some sanding before the next mist coat…
http://images52.fotki.com/v737/photos/8/113398/7448438/091020Ferrari59907-vi.jpg
http://images52.fotki.com/v644/photos/8/113398/7448438/091020Ferrari59908-vi.jpg
Two more mist coats and then a wet coat; everything is going better now…
http://images54.fotki.com/v563/photos/8/113398/7448438/091021Ferrari59901-vi.jpg
http://images53.fotki.com/v431/photos/8/113398/7448438/091021Ferrari59902-vi.jpg
While the wet coats cure, the carbon fiber decals are applied to the dashboard, seats, door panels and center console, for this task, “Scale Motorsport” (Carbon Fiber Plain Weave Pewter 1424) decals are selected and with a good dose of “Micro Sol” and “Micro Set” and some heat applied with a hair dryer, the job is done…
http://images52.fotki.com/v734/photos/8/113398/7448438/091021Ferrari59903-vi.jpg
Carbon fiber decals finished, at the end I feel the pattern resulted a little too big…
http://images53.fotki.com/v419/photos/8/113398/7448438/091023Ferrari59901-vi.jpg
http://images54.fotki.com/v564/photos/8/113398/7448438/091023Ferrari59902-vi.jpg
http://images54.fotki.com/v564/photos/8/113398/7448438/091023Ferrari59903-vi.jpg
Once the first wet coat of the aerodynamic elements is completely dried, the respective carbon fiber decals are applied, for these parts, “Crazy Modeler” (Carbon Fiber CM-DC0122) is used, these decals do not work well with solvents, but can be applied with some extra work…
http://images52.fotki.com/v642/photos/8/113398/7448438/091023Ferrari59904-vi.jpg
http://images52.fotki.com/v638/photos/8/113398/7448438/091023Ferrari59905-vi.jpg
Back to the body and before the last wet coat, some sanding removes any imperfection or dust left in the surface, particularly, the hood resulted with an accentuated orange peel, but extra sanding did he job…
http://images53.fotki.com/v431/photos/8/113398/7448438/091023Ferrari59906-vi.jpg
http://images54.fotki.com/v563/photos/8/113398/7448438/091023Ferrari59907-vi.jpg
http://images53.fotki.com/v419/photos/8/113398/7448438/091023Ferrari59908-vi.jpg
And the last wet coat is applied…
http://images52.fotki.com/v644/photos/8/113398/7448438/091023Ferrari59909-vi.jpg
http://images53.fotki.com/v419/photos/8/113398/7448438/091023Ferrari59910-vi.jpg
Sanding between coats pays at the end of the process…
http://images54.fotki.com/v564/photos/8/113398/7448438/091023Ferrari59912-vi.jpg
After the carbon fiber decals of the interiors are completely cured, several coats of transparent lacquer are applied, then everything is masked to apply the interior color, in this case the interiors will be black leather, so, to reproduce the tone of black leather, (that never looks completely black) a very dark grey is mixed with Tamiya German Grey XF-63 and Semigloss black X-18 both enamel…
http://images53.fotki.com/v420/photos/8/113398/7448438/091026Ferrari59901-vi.jpg
Using this tone allows applying some shading with black…
http://images54.fotki.com/v563/photos/8/113398/7448438/091026Ferrari59902-vi.jpg
The resulting seats and door panels…
http://images52.fotki.com/v644/photos/8/113398/7448438/091026Ferrari59903-vi.jpg
http://images54.fotki.com/v563/photos/8/113398/7448438/091026Ferrari59904-vi.jpg

Your work inspired me a lot, i like to see more work of yours, you need to be more hard working
about the scale motorpsort carbon fiber plain weave that you use, i think it looks big because your photo had been magnified, i think it should look alright from real distance, but if you really wanted a smaller size carbon fiber, you might want to try this:

this build looks really awesome. Quick question, when you mask the cf decals, what clear coat and masking material do you use? It seems like no matter how many clear coats I use, when I pull up the tape mask I pull up the decals with it!
Thanks,

Ramon, do you think it gives a better result to sand each coat of paint, or is it the same if you just sand the second last coat - to the same level of smoothness either way - before applying the final coat? I'm wondering if the final wet coat can possibly "draw out" some texture from unsanded lower layers. (sounds crazy I know...) Awesome CF on the dash btw - love that.

Quick question, when you mask the cf decals, what clear coat and masking material do you use? It seems like no matter how many clear coats I use, when I pull up the tape mask I pull up the decals with it! There are three factors that help a lot:
1.- A good surface for the decal to grab on, if you apply the decals over bare plastic, you depend only on the adhesive of the decal, so, a good thing here is to lay a coat of gloss paint, decals adhere a lot better over painted surfaces because you provide a soft surface for the decal adhesive to grab on. Note: never apply a decal over a flat color, it works the opposite.
2.- A good softener and heat, look for the right softener like MicroSol or MicroSet for the decals, but always test first, then some heat provided by a hair drier helps too because it softens the decal and causes it to melt a little blending into the surface, just be careful, too much heat and you will melt the plastic.
3.- Reduce the adhesive of the masking, what I do is just touch the adhesive, the oil and dirt on the fingers removes and neutralizes a little the adhesive.
I think If you take care of these 3 factors you will be able to use any clear lacquer over your decals and then masking without risk, for the record, in the dashboard I used Tamiya masking tape, over TS-13 Clear lacquer (through airbrush), the decals are “Scale Motorsport” applied over “Testors” Gloss black enamel paint applied without primer.
Ramon, do you think it gives a better result to sand each coat of paint, or is it the same if you just sand the second last coat - to the same level of smoothness either way - before applying the final coat? I'm wondering if the final wet coat can possibly "draw out" some texture from unsanded lower layers. (sounds crazy I know...)One big advantage of sanding between coats is that you can remove any particle of dust that could land on your finish; otherwise this particle will be buried under the following coats creating a bump at the end.
If no particles of dust fall at all over your last coat, I think you can go on with the next coat and sand at the end, but I’m not sure if the following coats would magnify the orange peel of the first coats.
Another advantage is that sanding small imperfections or dust particles is very easy and quick, or at least quicker than sanding a rough finish at the end, I think the amount of work would be the same, sanding between coats allows you to do it in several light sessions.
And well, onto the works

Assembly and interior detailing…
After everything was painted the next step for the interior tub is carpeting, to do this, velveted paper is used, this material is better than flock since it is very fine, which is more adequate for the scale and there are a lot of colors available.
To cut the velveted paper to the right size, patterns are made for every section with masking tape, then cyanoacrilate and “Testors” transparent parts glue, are used to adhere the carpeting to the interior tub…

http://images53.fotki.com/v432/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59903-vi.jpg
And then the dashboard, one of my favorite parts…
Masking to paint the aluminum trimming, the AC control panel and the lights switch panel…
http://images54.fotki.com/v564/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59904-vi.jpg
The “CM” PR radio face is too flat, so, buttons are added using plastic rod…

http://images52.fotki.com/v733/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59906-vi.jpg
The buttons of the lights panel were incorrect, so they were removed and replaced with buttons made with turned aluminum and plastic, the buttons of the AC controls are Ok, so they just need the Revell decals which are very nice.
When heat was applied to help conforming the decals to the AC buttons, the heat affected the accelerator pedal bending it, so both pedals were removed and replaced with soldering pressed to obtain a squared profile…
http://images52.fotki.com/v304/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59907-vi.jpg
So, all the PE parts are added: pedals, instrument cluster, AC Vents, radio and emblems

To detail the steering column, a PE switch cylinder lock is added, the shift pads were covered with CF decal, and some painting detail for the light switches…
http://images52.fotki.com/v729/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59909-vi.jpg
Details for the steering wheel are added: the “Manettino” was made with small pieces of plastic, and the starting button was made with plastic rod…
http://images54.fotki.com/v556/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59910-vi.jpg
With this, the dashboard is complete…
http://images53.fotki.com/v431/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59911-vi.jpg
The seats just required some shading made with airbrush; the “Cavallinos” from the Revell decals were added to the head rests…
http://images54.fotki.com/v563/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59913-vi.jpg
The whole interior assembly, the last details to add will be the safety belt harnesses…
http://images9.fotki.com/v447/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59914-vi.jpg
The 4 point safety belt harness is made using the seatbelt material from “Modeler’s” and the buckles come from the “S27” and the “Crazy Modeler” PE sets…
Tamiya masking tape was used to determine lengths and make tests…

Quick question, when you mask the cf decals, what clear coat and masking material do you use? It seems like no matter how many clear coats I use, when I pull up the tape mask I pull up the decals with it! There are three factors that help a lot:

And the chassis is ready, now it is turn for the interior detailing
Assembly and interior detailing…
After everything was painted the next step for the interior tub is carpeting, to do this, velveted paper is used, this material is better than flock since it is very fine, which is more adequate for the scale and there are a lot of colors available.
To cut the velveted paper to the right size, patterns are made for every section with masking tape, then cyanoacrilate and “Testors” transparent parts glue, are used to adhere the carpeting to the interior tub…
http://images53.fotki.com/v431/photos/8/113398/7448438/091029Ferrari59915-vi.jpg
http://images54.fotki.com/v556/photos/8/113398/7448438/091029Ferrari59916-vi.jpg
http://images53.fotki.com/v425/photos/8/113398/7448438/091029Ferrari59917-vi.jpg
Luggage belts and storage net from the “CM” PE set…
http://images116.fotki.com/v720/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59901-vi.jpg
The roll bar is installed along with the PE bolt heads for the brackets…
http://images53.fotki.com/v432/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59903-vi.jpg
And then the dashboard, one of my favorite parts…
Masking to paint the aluminum trimming, the AC control panel and the lights switch panel…
http://images54.fotki.com/v564/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59904-vi.jpg
The “CM” PR radio face is too flat, so, buttons are added using plastic rod…
http://images54.fotki.com/v563/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59905-vi.jpg
http://images52.fotki.com/v733/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59906-vi.jpg
So, all the PE parts are added: pedals, instrument cluster, AC Vents, radio and emblems
http://images54.fotki.com/v564/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59908-vi.jpg
To detail the steering column, a PE switch cylinder lock is added, the shift pads were covered with CF decal, and some painting detail for the light switches…
http://images52.fotki.com/v729/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59909-vi.jpg
Details for the steering wheel are added: the “Manettino” was made with small pieces of plastic, and the starting button was made with plastic rod…
http://images54.fotki.com/v556/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59910-vi.jpg
With this, the dashboard is complete…
http://images53.fotki.com/v431/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59911-vi.jpg
The seats just required some shading made with airbrush; the “Cavallinos” from the Revell decals were added to the head rests…
http://images54.fotki.com/v563/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59913-vi.jpg
The whole interior assembly, the last details to add will be the safety belt harnesses…
http://images9.fotki.com/v447/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59914-vi.jpg
The 4 point safety belt harness is made using the seatbelt material from “Modeler’s” and the buckles come from the “S27” and the “Crazy Modeler” PE sets…
Tamiya masking tape was used to determine lengths and make tests…
http://images9.fotki.com/v449/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59915-vi.jpg
The harness mounted in the left seat…
http://images12.fotki.com/v197/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59917-vi.jpg
The right seat harness before mounting it…
http://images110.fotki.com/v565/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59918-vi.jpg
And the interior tub is complete…
http://images9.fotki.com/v448/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59919-vi.jpg
http://images20.fotki.com/v534/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59920-vi.jpg
http://images9.fotki.com/v450/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59922-vi.jpg
The dashboard…
http://images9.fotki.com/v449/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59921-vi.jpg
Next step is the engine bay cover with all the caps, containers, grills and latch already attached…
http://images20.fotki.com/v533/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59924-vi.jpg
Testing the interior tub and engine covers…
http://images45.fotki.com/v1423/photos/8/113398/7448438/091030Ferrari59925-vi.jpg
Back to the body, some masking is added to paint the window trimming…
http://images52.fotki.com/v729/photos/8/113398/7448438/091031Ferrari59901-vi.jpg
The light units are painted flat metallic gray and the lamp holders are made out of turned aluminum…
http://images54.fotki.com/v563/photos/8/113398/7448438/091031Ferrari59902-vi.jpg
So all the body parts are assembled, windows, headlamps, tail lamps, emblems, grills, rear body inserts, mirrors, etc. and then the body is matched to the chassis...
http://images53.fotki.com/v419/photos/8/113398/7448438/091031Ferrari59903-vi.jpg
And then the Hamann aerodynamic elements are temporary assembled to the body…
http://images19.fotki.com/v285/photos/8/113398/7448438/091031Ferrari59904-vi.jpg
http://images52.fotki.com/v738/photos/8/113398/7448438/091031Ferrari59907-vi.jpg
http://images52.fotki.com/v639/photos/8/113398/7448438/091031Ferrari59908-vi.jpg
Windshield wipers and engine bay cover are assembled…
http://images53.fotki.com/v431/photos/8/113398/7448438/091031Ferrari59911-vi.jpg
The car was assembled and partially finished to take it to the IPMS-Mexico Nationals, latter will be added the rest of details missing, as the correct Hamann wheels, some emblems, aluminum exhaust tips, etc…

Awesome work, the best 599 I've seen. I found pics of this car online one day and thought I would build the 599 I have into the same car. Considering the work you put into yours, I've decided to build mine in a way that requires a little less scratch building skill.

Again, thank you KevHw, Gamerxz, Mark, Bill, Valentin, Mike, Dadimix, jayll, rx7king and Cesar for your great comments, I’m so flattered that modelers like you all dedicate sometime to write such highly motivating words, they are much appreciated.
And well, onto the works… things become a little funny this time…
The wheels drama…
Back from the IPMS Nationals where the 599 got the best results, the car is disasembled to finish the last details, starting with the change to the correct wheels.
Few months after this model was started, and a little bit after I finished the wheels you already saw, “Hobby Design” issued the “Hamann Edition Race” resin wheels, which are the correct ones for this car, the box includes 4 resin wheels, 4 tires, hubs for polycaps (Fujimi type) and rods (Tamiya type)…
http://images12.fotki.com/v252/photos/8/113398/7448438/091210Ferrari59901-vi.jpg
http://images20.fotki.com/v528/photos/8/113398/7448438/091210Ferrari59902-vi.jpg
The finish of the resin is not the best, some work is required to correct the rough finish, another problem, is that all the wheels have the same width and the 599 Hamann has (345/25) at the rear and (245/30) at the front…
http://images51.fotki.com/v730/photos/8/113398/7448438/091211Ferrari59901-vi.jpg
Another problem commonly found on resin wheels, is that the circumference of the ring is not always perfect, in this case the circumference is not a problem but the centering of the perforations for the lug nuts is a little offset…
http://images9.fotki.com/v450/photos/8/113398/7448438/091211Ferrari59902-vi.jpg
The label on the box states that these wheels are 20” (22.61 mm at 1:24 scale) but measure 22.96 mm, so they’re off for scale 8 mm and since the Hamann rides on 21” wheels, new aluminum wheel rings will be made to the equivalent diameter of 23.66 mm…
http://images51.fotki.com/v730/photos/8/113398/7448438/091211Ferrari59903-vi.jpg
As was mentioned before, the finish of these resin wheels is far from smooth, so a lot of careful sanding is required to obtain the correct surface finish (at the left the corrected wheel)…
http://images56.fotki.com/v1597/photos/8/113398/7448438/100117Ferrari59901-vi.jpg
Since the suspension is the Fujimi type, the polycap-hubs will be the fixation parts to be used; when checking the wheels from behind I feel the wheel branches are too thick, so they have to be thinned…
http://images53.fotki.com/v439/photos/8/113398/7448438/100117Ferrari59902-vi.jpg
And the drama begins…
So, one of the wheels was mounted in the lathe to remove some material from behind, but a movement of the wrong handwheel of the crosslide and I broke the wheel in pieces!!!!!...
http://images51.fotki.com/v730/photos/8/113398/7448438/100128Ferrari59901-vi.jpg
My first thoughts were going to the Internet to order a new set, but I have already spent a lot in this kit so I don’t want to spend more, another solution was to copy one of the wheels in resin, the problem with this solution is shrinkage, with the best of resins you get at least a 1% to 2% shrinking, so I would have to make 4 copies, plus, I don’t have the materials to do this, and go back to the first one, I don’t want to spend more, so, the only solution was trying to repare the wheel, if this fail, ordering a new set would be the only solution…

Wheel rings removed and everything is going back on track, new aluminum rings will be made…
http://images52.fotki.com/v641/photos/8/113398/7448438/100202Ferrari59902-vi.jpg
After some primer, the finish is still bad on the 3 wheels that weren’t repaired, so more sanding is required…
http://images18.fotki.com/v457/photos/8/113398/7448438/100209Ferrari59901-vi.jpg
The casted part of the Hamann wheels includes a ring (which is part of the casting) that will fix the center to the aluminum rings, so this small ring is cut out from the old resin rings…

For the lug nuts the first idea was to use the newly released (or at least I just discovered them) “Hobby Design - wheel nuts” but even the short ones resulted to long for these wheels, so the other option are the “MCG” bolt heads which provided the desired result…

Well, that’s all for a drama, I wanted to share this mess, because it resulted in some interesting technics, and as I always say, any comments, advices, corrections or suggestions are always welcome.
In the next installment, which will be the last, you’ll see the final assemblies and the last detailing to finish the car.

jst ran into this thread and OMG! the details are amazing. the last step by step write up on how to improve the wheels was great. I felt weak seeing the smashed rim on the lathe but the results with the metal sleeves are 100000x better. great job! subscribed to this :)

Those wheels are great. I had a problem with the Hobby Design wheels for my California model. I just glued back together and sanded them, no machining. Your attention to detail is amazing.
I want to see these wheels in person now.

Um, I don't know what to say...nothing escapes your attention for detail, does it? Even with just the wheels you've put in more effort than I have for an entire model at times!

Hola Ramon, espero que todo te fue bien con el vuelo.
I must say that I saw this kit at the show and was blown away. The car was clean and crisp to say the least. I had not even seen this WIP thread until last night lol, and must say that this is extremely sick and not fair hahaha. I love this kit and sadly I only got 1 good picture with my camera :crying:.
It was a pleasure to meet you Ramon and hope to see more of your worlk in the future.
