My little stash of precious dust collectors. I _might_ have a few boxes to many, but I doubt it ;).

This topic surely brings up those special moments: Ooooh.. that one I _need_ as well for my collection!

Mind you, this is not my complete collection at the moment. Somehow some pictures have gone missing (and as have some kits...)

(edit 2020-06-03)
Photobucket doesn't allow hosting pictures anymore, so I had to remove the links to them.

Here is my "Tower of Power". There are only three plastic models shown here. The projects haven't even started yet already include about $300 in extra resin, photo-etch, decals and paint. What's not shown are the 100's of photo's and pages of documentation I've been accumulating. Each car will take about four months to complete so this is my car hobby work for at least the next year. At that rate I can only build 30 models per decade!

Hi guys,

Couldn't resist this one. Here's my next few projects lined up:

http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt121/ScratchBuilt917/90803130.jpg

Somewhere amongst that lot there's a Porsche 936, 935-78, 956 / 962, all in 1/8 scale...! At my current rate of progress that's about the next seven or eight years modelling taken care of.

Seriously though, here's my small selection of unbuilt kits:

http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt121/ScratchBuilt917/90803128.jpg

I'm not expecting to do anything with them, but the 956/92's could be useful references when I build one in 1/8. Anyway, I thought having a stash of unbuilt kits was a necessary part of being a member of this forum?!

Cheers!

I don't dare taking a picture of my stock...

The size of that German collection is really impressive. Too big for me though!

When I got back into models in the '90s I started buying kits at local shows off vendor tables. It was a lot of common stuff. I didn't even know what I liked yet. Then eBay came along and I discovered all kinds of model kits I hadn't known existed. WOW! I sorta went crazy buying stuff. My collection swelled to over 300 kits taking up a good portion of a spare bedroom. It was around that time I realized that acquiring kits wasn't as much fun as it had been when I had begun buying years before. It was as though each new kit I bought meant just a little less than the last, to the point where I scarcely glanced at them before I plopped them on the shelf never to be opened again. I concluded there were two things going on: 1) I had so many just looking at 'em overwhelmed me...and 2) I was simply running out of kits to buy that even interested me.

About 2000 I started thinning my hoard by selling off kits I had multiples of. Then I started narrowing the focus by selling peripheral subjects I wasn't that interested in. Then I really started selling when I began getting rid of stuff I knew I could get anytime, anywhere (..unless of course it was in the "soon to be built" stack!).

Guy's, I'm still selling kits off but I'm down to things that are really hard to get that I'm sure I will always want to build some day. My goal is to have a collection of about 30 kits at any given time. Frankly, it's getting a lot harder now selling a rare kit because I know that it might not be available later if my interests change. Funny. Though I worry about this I haven't regretted selling any to date.

I hope by sharing this experience it will save someone 15 years of energy(and a lot of closet space) coming to a similar conclusion. For me, listing models on eBay is boring and a large collection wasn't nearly as much fun as the small concentrated one I have now.

Hi,

well guys, the man that owns these many kits is 55 to 60 years old. For sure, collecting model is the dominant aspect, building models happens by the way. He also owns some oldtimers.

My opinion is, that we all have too much kits at home, of course myself (about 250 kits). From time to time I look at all the unbuilt kit very critically and ask myself the question: "Will I build this kit in the next time?" - If not, I sell it. Thus the number of unbuilt kits remains nearly the same.

The ideal thing would be to build a model and before it is finished getting the next kit.

I have lots of resinkits, that run only a short time, but concerning plastic kits - don´t worry, there will be reissues every few years.

Whoa, that German collection is....don't even have a word for it....vast? :-)
Just like CrateCruncher, I had way to many kits collected over the years (thousands), only to realize that I will never touch them - so I sold most of my kits. I'm down to about 300 of the ones I really want to build, mostly resin and rare plastics, with few favorite subjects mixed in:

one to practice
one to build proper
one in case you want to build it again but better than the last one
one so that you have one for futire building
one to practice on so that future building will have less mistakes
one for spare parts
one for spare parts for your spare parts

wait a minute...
that's more than three.

Plus making different versions out of it!

That is my only reason I have mutiple kits of one specific kit. For example I bought multiple S27 vipers is to make the 2000LM #51, 52 and maybe 53, and the forth kit with aftermarket decals make the 2003 LM Larbre viper (not the 2001 because I bought decals from pattosplace. c o m for the 03LM). And with the S27 550 GT1 to make the two 04LM prodrive ferrari's with custom made decals I had someone made for me.
