I need to replace the front rotors and brake pads on my 99 sl2 and I was curious as to the best way to release the pressure on the calipers so that I may fit the new brake pads in.

You push the pistons back in using a Brake tool or C-Clamp.

+1 and loosen the brake fluid reservoir cap before compressing the calipers.

Also, monitor the fluid level in the master cylinder-if you have added fluid with worn pads then most likely it will overflow when you push the piston back in to replace the pads. You might have to remove some of it to prevent a paint removing mess from happening.
