I got the removal thingies from Advanced ($7, get them from Walmart if you can), inserted them all the way and also kind of push them outward as I pull to no avail. I'm also grabbing and pulling from the cassette deck opening, will not come out. Is there some kind of trick to this? Does any of the trim need to be removed first?

Actually they are to barely inserted ... you kinda feel the first small "bump". And then you pull them "together" slightly ... IIRC ... its been a while since I've used them.

when you have the "U" shaped removal tool inserted into the holes put slight pressure on the tool outwards (which causes the spring clips within the radio/chassis to move inwards. You have to imagine that the spring clips on the radio push outward from the radio to keep it in place. Moving the tools apart causes the clips to move in. FWIW, I always use a piece of coat hanger so no special tool is needed for those who haven't had the pleasure of removing that radio.

I'm posting a picture of the removed radio. As previously stated, if you have the U tool from Advanced, you insert slowly about 1-1/4" and you feel a "bump" as it engages. Then you spread the two U tools outward and pull. A coat hangar will work fine, but the tool has notches at the end that help grab the radio for the pull out. You would need to pull from the cassette opening without it.
Well, looks like the system won't let me upload the picture, you can find it here:
