P1744 Code on 2001 Windstar

O/D Off light starting flashing, followed by the check engine light coming on. Autozone read code and their troubleshooting guide says the trans is low on fluid. Well, I checked, and it was a little low. Once I started adding fluid, I noticed trans started leaking fluid at a rapid rate. I couldn't really tell where it was coming from. It was dripping underneath where engine/trans come together (right off of screw to secure what appears to be a shield or access cover). After searching this forum, I see P1744 code could mean worse. I am going to try and replace TRS tomorrow. Could trans be leaking from under this switch? Other than the codes, and maybe a slight slip when trans is in OD, it shifts and pulls strong through all gears. If the light wasn't flashing (and now the major leak), I would think nothing is wrong. Any thoughts or ideas before major surgery? 2001 Ford Windstar LX 3.8l w/ 119,000 miles. No major work on trans ever.
