Howdy, I've got a 2000 GTP with the Bose system and I'm getting a lot of weird estimates on how much it'll cost to buy a new deck. Some places have told me it would cost $120 with labour plus the deck, and some tell me it'll be around $300 plus the deck. None of the places I've checked will bother to give me a hard estimate. I replaced the deck in my Camaro and it only cost about $130 plus the cost of the cd player (it has the upgraded bose system), but apparently in 2000 GM made their cd players hooked up to more stuff and complicated? I'm kind of confused, am I getting dicked around?

One question do you have Onstar, that is one thing that may make the cost go up. Take a look at crutcfield web site and you can look at what is possibly need for your car.

Yeah, I think you may have to purchase a seperate interface to be able to use an aftermarket deck with the bose system, but in the 2000 Grand Prix's, the factory radio does not need to be relocated.
Ask them for an itemized listing (breakdown) of the estimate and find out where your money is going.

I don't have Onstar. I'll go back and ask for an actual breakdown of what i'd be paying for in paper.

Sounds good! Why are you having them install it anyways? You can definatly do it yourself at a fraction of the cost. With you money you save doing it yourself, you could buy a sweet head unit mount like this one....

Installing a new radio is not all that hard. As long as you take your time it will be a piece of cake. It is not very hard at all. Speaking of radios I have pull mine and fix it. The hiding front panel has a stripped gear so I currently have no music.

Is your deck a Kenwood Doc? If it is, it's probably the cable that is bad, very common issue on Kenwood decks with the motorized flip-face front panel. They will start to flip, make a grinding noise, then either stop completely or go back to the original position.

Yes richtazz it is how did you guess that. It has been making the grinding noise in the winter for a while now. Then the other day it failed to open. Now it just grinds and will not open. So I guess I will pull it out and see if there is anything I can do to fix it. Thanks for the heads up on the radio issue.

I've actually switched out a deck myself before and it was really simple, except I assumed that with all the extra crap I need to buy it would be harder. Didn't get to go to any stores to get quotes on paper today, I'll have to do it tomorrow and see what they say. Doing it myself would save $50 though.

More than that due to the special interface that is needed. The installation places, jack up the prices on the extras need for the installation.

OK I've got the estimate on paper.
$219.99 for GM051 (it's called peripheral or somehting? This is because I've got the Bose speakers and apparently the cd player is hooked up to my airbags)
$18.99 for BHA 1858 (harness?)
$29.99 for BKGM4 (fit kit/bracket i think)
$49.00 for labour
$17.99 for BAA4B (antenna adaptor i think)
$149.99 for PESWIX (if i want to keep my steering wheel controls)
So if I kept my steering wheel controls it would equal $485.95 plus the deck plus tax...Jesus.

hmm, thats Odd...i needed that part in my 04 Grand Am when i had an aftermarket deck put in. It was because the hazards, and the airbags went through the harness. 97-03 prix should use the same harness, unless you have on star, which wasnt an option until 2001.

Yeah, I agree. I would take it somewhere else.
Heck, where are you at? Want to come to central MN on a road trip? You can drive home with a brand new cd player!!!

Also, the 97-03 GP's do not need to have the radio relocated, it is not ran in the airbag system, so whatever idiot told you that needs to check his sources. Its like that for 04+ GP's.
But if you don't believe us, just unhook your radio and take your car for a quick drive. I'd be willing to bet everything works like it should except you dont have a radio.
Did you check out crutchfield.com for install instructions?

The weird thing is that I've gotten a similar estimate from 3 different places (futureshop, bestbuy, visions electronics). However one guy used this bestkits.com and told me $150, and then everyone else didnt use the site and told me $300, now this guy i asked today used it and looked puzzled, and then went into the back and came out and said the site was wrong and it would be what i stated in my last post (the nearly $500 with my steering wheel controls). The site bestkits.com also separates the years of Grand Prix from 94-2003 and then from 04 on, so I don't get why everyones saying I need different stuff for a 2000.
Gah, something just doesn't feel right.
I live in alberta, canada, btw.

Tell us what type of radio you have, and we will help you out with what to buy to make it work, and how to install it. I know you can do this yourself.

Were you able to get your aftermarket radio installed with Bose? If not I can try and guide you through it as mine is done with Bose. And its a double din :)
