Perf/Norm switch 1997 saturn SL1

Ok so i have a 1997 saturn, ive only had it for 2 days. There is a switch next to the gear shift that says perf/norm i know it means performance and normal. When you click it over to performance what is the difference? Does it stay in a lower gear going up hills so it doesnt have to downshift? I dont want to click this on and drop my tranny lol and help would be cool.

In Perf mode, the shifts are quicker, harder, and redline is increased.
