Is the intermediate steering shaft a typical problem? I have a clunk coming from my 2007 Impala also when turning?

Is the intermediate steering shaft a typical problem? I have a clunk coming from my 2007 Impala also when turning? the shafts are bad on all impalas from 2000-2005 and need to be replaced or re greased, not sure about the 06's and up.

Im pretty sure even the 06+ are affected by the bad Intermed. shafts, although knock on wood both our 07 and 09 hasn't made a single noise yet.

Thanks for the information. Is this something the average backyard mechanic can do, or does it require removing something majior to get to it?

FYI: Make sure the steering wheel does not move during the intermediate shaft replacement of you will be forced to take it to the dealer to correct.
Otherwise this repair is not too hard

I had a click in my 2004 steering, wasn't a crack just a small click when turning. I pulled back the boots on the steering knuckles ( one under the dash and one behind drivers side wheel). Take driver side wheel off to do this. Pull boots back and put some white lithium grease on them. No more click

to fix the clunk, click, thud in your steering you should keep the Intermediate steering shaft lubed.
