Oil filter whoopsie

This is the second time I had to tighten the oil filter on my/wife's '03. :mad: I've wiped off the threads and mounting every oil change, no threads were gouged up or crossed. The filter just worked its way loose, so from now on I'm going to keep a filter in the trunk and enough oil when I get paid again on the 18th. I hate to say it having been raised on GM that this is the last GM I'm buying. I'll check out a "certified" Fusion v6 when I go to replace my '00 cavalier. That thing I bought new and it ran fine before warranty was up like anything in the world does. The oil filter on that one seems fine (I hope) being a horizontal filter mount.

What brand filter are you using? I'd start there. The quality of GM filters has decreased over the years as their production has been outsourced. Perhaps it's a low quality filter and it's inferior parts such as the threads or ring seal that is failing.Try another filter from another brand and see if it happens again, then you will have narrowed down the possibilities.

I would check the parts manual as I think you may be getting the wrong size filter sometimes the cross reference manuals are not correct.
I have also been getting inferior parts as suggested.

I've NEVER had that happen to me with a stock filter (AC/Delco). I currently have seven vehicles to keep running, and they all get Mobil 1 and Delco filters - 191 V-6, 231 V-6, 134 I-4, 262 V-6, 305 TPI, and two LT1s. That's not to mention a previous Pontiac 400, Cadillac 425, 472, Olds 455, a GMC 366T, SBC 355, 305, 267, and several non-GM vehicles I've had in the last 35 years of driving.

That's not to say that you didn't get a faulty filter, but if the filter is installed properly (oil the gasket ring, tighten an additional 3/4 turn after gasket contact), it should not leak. Then again, your post does not indicate what type or brand of oil filter you installed and which worked loose.

If your using after market filters take one to a hardware and check the threads with a thread gage. The hardware man will show you how to use it and their cheap. Buy the thread gage and check the pitch on the filter base. The filter and base should be the same pitch. I've never had this happen but I've checked the pitch on some older filters to determine if they would fit a vehicle I had.
Normally you can feel if the filter doesn't feel right and stop I have picked up a wrong filter by mistake but I noticed it when screwing it on. Leaving on the rubber from an old filter by mistake will cause a leak.
