Striping Paint - Live test

So, the thread Touching up paint after clearcoat (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=948541) gave me a good tip and I tried the spot painting.

Carefully masked following the panel lines around the areas I messed up, sanded and then washed the body.

Looked ok so I even went the obsessive-compulsive way and remasked this time using surgical gloves...

The mist coats went well but then on the wet coat...it worked well :icon16:...but then while it was drying...the paint started to crackle :disappoin

Sorry no pictures of that...donīt worry though, I will eventually make the same mistake again

As Scuderia Ferrari (The F1 Team) said on their press release, "A New Approach is Needed", after the dreadful Malaysian weekend...anyway..

The new approach is, strip the paint - automotive paint and clear coat - with Isopropyl(?) Alcohol 99,8%, I asked the salesman for 99,9% he said it didīt exist, letīs give him the benefit of the doubt.

I stated live test in the thread because I will watch it for the next few hours and post pics as it goes. Some say it takes days other a couple of hours, letīs see how mine goes.

Materials used:

- 2 liters plastic ziploc type container
- 2 liters Isopropyl(?) Alcohol 99,8%
- the messed up body

Step 1 body in alcohol

See you soon..I hope

Did you change the paint or the clearcoat when you touched it up? There should be no reason for it to crack on you. Did you spray too heavy too fast? Did you spray outside or somewhere where humidity could have played a part?

No, all the same.
Did you spray too heavy too fast?Maybe, but I tried to follow the same way I did the first time
Did you spray outside or somewhere where humidity could have played a part? No, it was all done in the same place, and actually I did check the humidity and it was the same on both days 39%.

What I tend to believe is that I didnīt sand enough and it reacted with the clear coat.

Did you wash the body with a soap? Perhaps you might have left some sort of chemical on the body.

Not sanding enough doesn't seem like it should cause that to me. I've never had that issue unless they were different kinds of paint. It might make it look rough but if these are all compatible paints I don't see why it would crack on you. You might have had an issue with drying times, maybe clearing it too fast effected the basecoat.

I see your point, but as I donīt think I made myself clear - no pun intended:wink:, I didnīt do a clearcoat afterwards, it cracked on the wet coat of the base paint that is why I think there may be some spots where the sanding didnīt get the first clear coat, but most likely I should have waited more to do the wet coat.

Oh, and yes I washed thoroughly no spots lefts, as I stated before even mask it using gloves.

I think that the main reason is that since this is only my third kit after a decade off the hobby the learning curve is quite steep, and been able to remove paint as easily as this is proving, for me, it helps a lot climbing that hill. And I have no artistic talent whatsoever...not to get into that sort of discussion but I think you get my point.
