I drive a 1999 s/w how often do you replace the PCV valve? Is there a way to test my existing valve?

IMHO they are not worth checking. There cheap enough to just replace. I ended up changing mine for the first time at about 80k. Not sure if it was bad, but I was doing a tune up, and a valve cover gasket so I did it. Check the hoses going to it. Mine rotted out at about 150K. So if you got miles on the car, not a bad idea to check over that hose, and the breather hose to the intake tube.

I have never replaced mine on any of my s-series so far. However I do clean and inspect them. They are the one part that is supposed to rattle. A little carb cleaner to get it to rattle and you should be good to go.

That's all you need to hear. Except I am even lazier. I replace them at 30K with the plugs and wires. Careful with the elbow hose that connects it to the pipe to manifold. They tend to be brittle after all these years. Try to grab it from the front as close to the end as possible. They like to break right at the 90.
