Usually folks tackle the switches at the front of the sliding side doors, which is well and good ... but sometimes miss the small switch that is at the rear door jamb. Of course, any door can be the problem maker ... and the rear liftgate is sometimes the culprit. On some year models, the liftgate inner trim panel must be removed to do effective cleaning/lubrication on the latch sensor devices.

This was a problem on the Ford trucks too. Easy fix is to spray the latch mechanism with WD40. The switch is actually in the latch and it gets dirty over time. Spray all the doors latches and see if that helps.

On my 1999, I found that jiggling the ignition key housing ring would turn off the dome light which would come on at random while driving. I sprayed graphite lock cleaner in the keyhole, operated the mechanism a number of times, and have not had a problem since. I believe there may be a switch in there that turns on the dome light for a period of time after you turn the car off and remove the key. That function is somehow not working properly and ocassionally energizing the dome light.

The front door switch is inside the door.....mounted to the bottom side of the latch.
I posted a couple pictures of it in the pictures that the link in my signature takes you to.
Unfortunately, it is hard to see the switch in the picture.

Also.....cleaning the sliding door switches...both the contacts on the forward pillar and the spring loaded contacts on the door........as well as making sure that the spring loaded ones are aligned correctly.
I have had mine get bumped and not be straight.
My '96 has 4 sliding door contacts.......2 for the door closed sensor and 2 for the door lock.

You didn't mention if the DOOR AJAR indicator comes on. If it doesn't then it's not the door latches or switches. My 99 windstar did this when we use my wife's keys. She keeps extra things on her keyring and the weight would make them shake the switch. The van thinks she was pulling out the keys to get out, thus turning on the interior lights.

Since this old post has been resucitated, I thought I'd post an update to my initial post on this problem back in 1/2007 and the success of the fix. I'm happy to report that since I sprayed the inside of the ignition keyhole with graphite lubricant, I have not had a single incident of the light coming on, in fact, I didn't even remember the problem until this post appeared in my mailbox. Do so at your own risk, but the fix has worked long term.
