Bought my 93 Metro convertible with 94,000 miles in January. Got home (600 mile drive) and noticed it was burning a quart of oil every 300 miles or so. Did a hot compression check and got 159/159/70 dry and over 200 all three wet (oil). I read all the threads here on removing the head and got it off today as well as removing the oil pan and cylinders.

I am pretty sure what to do with the bottom end (clean pistons, hone cylinders, new rings, new rod bearings). My only question I have here is do I have to use the cylinder reaming tool on the cylinders? The cylinders pushed out easily from the underside and I don't feel a lip on the top of the cylinders.

I am less certain about what to do with the head. Should I be fairly certain the rings are causing the oil loss? If so should I just leave the head alone and put it back on as is? How do I tell if I have a burnt valve? Are they the proper color? Should I change the valves just because I have it apart? Should I just send the head to a shop?
If so what do i ask for - a valve job or ask them to rebuild the head or what? What should that cost?

Thanks for any opinions and replys,
Neil in Louisville

I highly recommend replacing the exhaust valves. They are known to burn and may not show visible leaks.

If you don't want to rebuild the Head yourself....take it to a shop and have it done.

Mine cost $250 with the Gasket Set included (some of which I used to put the
head back on with).

If you can get the Pistons back in with the new rings on them, maybe no need to
ream the tops of the cylinders...(?)

Mine now has about 20,000 miles on the Head rebuild and Ring and Rod Bearings
replacement that I did on my thread two years ago.

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=613410 (LONG - HUGE !)

It runs like a new car (power) and gets 48 mpg in the summer, doesn't use oil and the oil stays nice
and clean up to the 3,000 mile oil change.
