'05 Impala 9C1 HVAC blower not working

I havn't looked into anything yet, just hoping to get some help finding a starting point.

Car is an old police car (3.8L) with 70k on the clock. I have a feeling the wiring will be a mess when I get into it probably because they just yanked out all the switches and equipment when they decomissioned the car. Half of the dash lights dont work, and other things are just wierd ie: turning the dimmer up until it clicks will lay on the horn rather than turning on the dome light.

on to the problem at hand. the heat worked great when I bought the car about 2k miles ago (4 months). Over time I thought that it might not be blowing as hard but thought I might be imagining it. Then it began working intermittenly. Wouldn't come on when I started the car, but would after driving for a while. Now it doesn't come on at all. Playing with the dials I can hear the mix door actuators moving, and the vents will get warm, but the blower will never come on no matter what.

Sucks to happen in Jan/Feb in western NY and what's worse is I have to drive around with the windows down so my windsheild doesn't fog up. not fun in the single digits so any advice is greatly appreciated.

I think the mix doors operate off a vacumn source , might have some lines pulled loose . As far as the heater motor not operating , have you checked the fuses ? There's no telling what damage they did under the dash in their haste to " clean " their equipment out of the vehicle ? Let us know how you're coming with the repairs , good luck !

Yeah like I said all the mix and vent doors are still working, just the blower. I guess I will have to just dive into it and see what It looks like.

04/05 Impala's don't use vacuum for the blend doors. But that's working find so I don't think that matters. If it's been working intermittently I'd suspect the motor it self is shot. Also a possibility the Blower resistor is shot.

Also by "half the dash lights don't Work" What do you mean? That could simply be a few dead bulbs in the cluster if its just around the gauges that there not working. Also sounds like they messed up some wiring under the dash on the drivers side. If your somewhat savy, You could get a few schematics and try and clean some of their mess up.

On the head unit, half lit, the other side not, on the dash the fuel level indicator is unlit. one of the reading lamps in the rear-view doesn't work while the other does. some other glitches as well like the thing with the dimmer switch activating the horn and the dome light not functioning. (There is an aftermarket dome from it's days as a police car that works but doesn't come on when doors open etc.) Given the age of the car I'm doubtfull of the bulb's expiring naturally. I think it's far more likely the dash harness is mangled. Blower resistor is accessed by removing the glove box and the blower from the engine bay correct? I'm assuming the resistor is a unit and not actually just an electrical resistor.

Got some other issues I have back burnered until the summer when I get my Z32 out and free up the garage. Security light on but car still starts. CEL from a Bank 2 lean code. Already replaced the Bank 2 O2 sensor and then one after both sides come together so I think it is probably a vaccum or exhuast leak. or maybe an injector idk but that's what I'm dealing with right now.

Edit*

This is the resistor from RockAuto.com. Many people complain that the resistor harness was melted as well. Are they talking about the connector shown or is there another harness. if it is something seperate where can I get one (aside from dealer)

IIRC you remove the glovebox and pull the blower out from there aslo (not under the hood like older cars). After thinking about for a little while, Sure sounds like its the Blower motor it self that's shot. If it was the resistor, You would loose 1 or 2 speeds, then all of them.

Sure sounds like they crossed some wires and blew some bulbs, Because the way they are wired togther inside each unit (cluster and HU) its one Grey + in and a ground, if they were miswired NONE would work.

Think you need to check out The site that's in my Sig (Click "MY GARAGE"), Theres MANY 9c1 owners and a few electical gurus there.

Thanks for the advice. From what I read the resistor could cause you to lose one or more or even all speeds. I guess the best way to go about it is to examine it before I order anything and if there are no signs of melting/burning on the resistor or harness then I will start with the motor. Maybe hook it up to a 12v benchtop power source and see if it works.

Your logic for the dash lights sounds pretty sound as well, and thanks for the link. I'll check it out.
