Should the heater control light up when lights are turned on? The only thing that lights up is the off/on button. Other buttons light up when pressed but at night it's difficult to see what you are turning on unless you turn on overhead lamps.

..what about the other instrument lights ? THe light intensity of all these including heater control depend on the rheostat setting, control transistor and LPS fuse....and, of course, a working bulb in the heater console.

I got the same prob with a 96, gauge lights, switches et al all work but pretty much zippo (as described above..) on the heater controls. Radio lights come on ..sometimes.
Haven't got around to pulling the console to check it out, bulbs & stuff..

All dash lights work, the only dark place is the heater control panel. I removed it from the dash but its a circuit board so I can't find a bulb. Maybe the whole thing needs replacing even though it works well. Should it be lit up?

My question was answered. Now when it warms up a bit I'll take control apart and check out bulbs. At least now I know that the heater control panel is supposed to light in background. Hard to tell first time I took it apart as I'm not used to working on "newer cars". I like pre 67 cause anybody can fix them. Thanks.

My fix lasted for about two years. Last week I replaced the bulbs again. Maybe the bulbs I used first time were a bit too weak? Anyway, lights work again.
