Decal time is here again!

Took a few pictures to detail the technique for carbon fibre decaling. Started with the seat back. The Tamiya Evo VII doesn't come with carbon fibre decals for the seats but regular decals can be used instead.

I first applied some masking tape to the area to be decaled and traced the outline. Remove it and you have a template.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/984207Dcp_1190a.jpg

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/487809Dcp_1193a.jpg

Stick the tape to the back of the decal sheet and cut, I usually make it a little bigger to be on the safe side, the extra can be trimmed off later. I'm using Museum Collection Kevlar for the first time.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/337909Dcp_1195a.JPG

Then it is a matter of applying the decal, using setting solution and a hairdryer. I use a brush, cotton buds and even a toothpick to make the decal conform. Cut the excess off with a very sharp knife, using a bit of setting solution to release the excess. Now the seat is done! The Museum Collection decals turned out to be pretty good - very tough but still conformed nicely with a bit of work.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/218819Dcp_1196a.jpg

Now on with the rest of them :D

P.S. The seats and all the other bits to be decaled were first painted a gloss black to give the decals something to stick to - matt surface doesn't work as well and can lead to 'silvering'. After the decals are applied and dried a clear coat of matt, gloss or semi gloss can be applied for the correct finish.

Very awesome! You ought to make a separate Tutorial thread for that CF decal applying.

I think it'd be nice to add some flat black flocking to racing buckets, what do you think?

Dan, I think flocking would be a bit out of scale for 1/24th racing seats. Would be nice to see someone try it though. I'll just finish applying the rest of the decals then give the seats a matt clear coat. That is the best balance between accuracy and effort I believe.

However should Tamiya ever bless us with a 1/12th rallycar...

Doysha also make a 1/12th Stratos. Are there any more out there?

Point! Had a go with flocking today, had to wash myself of the results (read: horrible) but it probably would be too big. That Scale Motorsport "Faux Fabric" might do the trick, I read it sprays on to the consistency of 200-320 grit sandpaper or thereabouts. But like you said, the best balance between accuracy and time would be a really flat clearcoat over black. :)

very nice carbon detailing explanation, phil, i can't do better. ;)

That's this way that "carbon decalling became a pleasure and not a nightmare, believe me..."

Was a nightmare on my first pug 206, and a pleasure on my clk and in the same time the carbon cover area was multiple by 4 or 5.

hey phil, wat about this seat support ? come in kit or scratchbuild ?

HI Seb,

those seat rails are straight from the kit. They seem a bit chunky in the zoomed in photos but should look alright through the closed windows of the final build. Will have to do better if I ever get back to my doors open Evo VI. I think Renaissance have some PE replacements in one of their detail kits that look much more realistic.

Off on Holidays in a few hours so see everybody in a week or so :D

Here are the latest progress photos.

First up the body shell in my newly constructed spray booth. I used Gunze Mr Colour Shine Red, with a bit of regular red mixed in to dull the brightness down a bit. I think due to the cold I've been having some problems with orange peel in the paint. Nothing too bad that can't be sanded and polished out.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/270601Dcp_1200a.jpg

This is the rear window shelf covered with carbon fibre and a coat of flatened Tamiya smoke. The smoke was to darken the brightness of the museum collection CF decal.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/193843Dcp_1203a.jpg

Also coated the engine and rear transmission in smoke. The engine flattened, the transmission straight from the bottle. In this shot the PE wipers from the S27 detail set can be seen, I'm really impressed with these. Also the chromed reflectors for the light pod.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/319215Dcp_1208a.jpg
Lastly, I managed to fix the problem of the silver on silver graphics disapearing.

I emailed Mike Quarterman of UMI Graphics telling him of my plan to make some replacement decals and he sent me his original artwork for the required logo. He said the printers screwed up and they should have been grey instead of silver. Then I went to a local printer and had them print the logos onto clear decal paper. Then I sealed them with Microscale Liquid Decal and appled just like regular decals.

Thank you to those who provided advice on making decals. :bigthumb:
So here is the body shell all decaled up and waiting for some clear coats.

Used lots of different stuff. The gold is all brush painted Tamiya Gold Leaf. The suspension parts are airbrished Tamiya Titamium Silver. Engine is Tamiya Bronze, which looked terrible until I sprayed some smoke over the top. The radiator/intercooler and rear suspension bash plate are Alclad Aluminium. The reflectors are Alclad chrome with some graphite dust rubbed in to give an even higher shine. Also used Gunze copper and silver for some of the engine/diff parts.

Been making some slow progress on the Lancer lately. The main sticking point has been the roof, which somehow got badly scratched, right down to the silver decal. I had to strip it back and start again, this time I painted the silver. As a result, with all the clear coats, the area has been masked heaps of times. Had a problem with solvent or something leaking through the masking tape and wrinkling the surface of the already painted areas. That was a major pain to sand out and fix up, not the first time I've experienced this.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/937601Dcp_1259a.jpg

On the bottom of the chasis I used bare metal foil to cover the transmission tunnel cutout.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/447996Dcp_1263a.jpg

Made an elastic storage basket and mounted it on the rear of the roll cage.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/163244Dcp_1272a.jpg

Almost finished dash, just needs a couple of coiled cables from the steering wheel to the console.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/559032Dcp_1271a.jpg

And finaly the light pod, covered in carbon fibre and with the reflectors fitted. Don't think I'll do too much more to this, could get silly and add all the adjusting bolts but I want to hurry up and get the Lancer finished, so will cut a few corners.

Hi Ray, haven't been posting much lately, but I'm still around :)

Made the basket out of some plastic mesh from a Hasegawa Evo IV (another unfinished project, the mesh is ment for the front grill but PE replacements will look much better). Folded it over and taped up the edges with chart tape. Needed to use some super glue to make sure it stayed put. Before glueing it up I ran some nylon thread down the sides and used this to attatch it to the roll cage, again using small drops of super glue to keep it firmy in place.

I'm going to be taking next week off work so I'll finaly get the Lancer finished then, as well as starting on my next project.

IIRC, the cover comes as a clear part but when you're going to all the effort of making sure everything is absolutely accurate, it seems weird to leave the sump guard clear.

Yeah as Ray said, the guards in the kit come as clear pieces. However they aren't clear on the real car, rather made of metal or carbon fibre. Since the I want to make an accurate (as possible) replica of the real car, then they have to look like they are made of metal or carbon fibre, not clear plastic.

Thanks for the comments again everybody!

Here are todays progress photos. At the front, grills, bonnet pins, more decals and locating pins for the night stage turning lights have been added. Had a big scare with the headlights. Trying to install them Tamiya's way I cracked the paint off the edge of the right hand side headlight opening. Will have to repair this as best I can and try a different way of installing the light lenses. Probably just sit them in place and glue with 'Future' type floor wax.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/742798Dcp_1310a.jpg

After the drama at the front I took it very careful at the rear and rather than force fit chose to enlarge the holes for the tail light clusters. I think the fit must have been very tight in bare plastic, but after several coats of primer, base white, body colour and clear there is no clearance left! Something to be careful of if anybody plans to build this kit in the future.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/507703Dcp_1311a.jpg

Lastly a progress shot of the interior, still lots to do, like seat harness and spare wheel tie down.

I think you're about to finish a 1st place show winner again.

Can you tell me how you work with those tiny PE parts? What tools do you use to cut them, file them, etc?

About the filing part, I think I found an answer. I bought sand files/sticks this morning (I use metal files to file plastic/resin parts, they don't work on fragile metal parts), and they do a great job on filing pe parts.

Thanks Marco, dunno about winning anything, I've got lucky the past couple of times, cant fool all of the people all of the time

Perseverance is the only way to work with PE, it is very frustrating dealing with those tiny parts! I use a mini file set, tweasers and a pair of long nose pliers (with a flat face). I also have a small metal base that I use for cutting and bending on.

Just got a Scale Motorsports nut and fastener set, haven't used anything off it yet. But it looks great because all the PE is attatched to a rubber sheet. No filing needed - PE heaven :icesangel

Don't worry exhaust smoke. If you like I'll tell you all the things wrong with mine and you can fix them up when you build yours

Been thinking about what to build next. Yeah I know I should finish this one first! Got about half a dozen started projects (like the full engine Evo VI and SEAT Cordoba) but don't feel inspired about any of them at the moment. I was thinking of something new like a Ford rally car, either a 2003 Monte Focus or Tommi Makinen's 1994 1000 Lakes Escort. Or a Sportscar like a Le Mans Jaguar XJ220 conversion, AEG Sauber C9 or LMM Crocodile Audi R8. Then there is F1, maybe a Revell FW23 or Toyota?

Any suggestions/requests?
