Scan Tool

Does anyone use or own one of the over the counter scan tools(the $200 or so models)? I was thinking it might be a useful to have one in my tool box, for those times when the check engine light comes on. Between my cars and my kids cars it might get some use. If so, are any brand better than another? Thank You, in advance.

I'm gonna get one too and I've seen some on ebay for $30 (new) plus around $20 for shipping. All it does is read codes (OBD II), no live data like a $200 probably does. I think it'll be very useful.

You really need live data for any meaningful diagnostic capabilities.

There goes my great deal. I probably wouldn't understand most of the live data. I did manage to fix my old '93 GA once with just the code and that's about all you need and the cheap scanner has paid for itself. Live data would be cool though and I guy would probably start to understand after awhile.

http://www.levineautoparts.com/Equus.html Search Equus 3140 it gives 25 data streams and freeze frame. I had to buy a high speed cable for usb to update mine. I wanted something to update my 4000E which only goes to 2002. (http://www.levineautoparts.com/Equus.html)
If I need more a friend will let me use his Genesis at his shop but they run around $3500.00.
This one is around $240.00

Does it display all the same live data for OBD I as it does for OBD II? If not I don't see the need for one that only reads the OBD I codes. I can't wait to pick one up. Thanks for the help.

I always used my 4000E for the older cars. It won't pick up freeze frame. I get data on the older ones which I found out is very useful. I got this one because it will read can data. Otc wanted a yearly update and after I got of the garage business it didn't pay.

Thank you Sir; I'm gonna run down to the store and get one. I'm having starting problems with my 2000 Silverado and one mechanic said I should check that the air temp sensor is working with a scanner. Hopefully the 3140 will do that for me. Between the truck, '94 Lumina with OBD I, and an '05 Grand Caravan that is off warranty this month a good scanner should pay for itself in no time. Especially with all the problems I've been having lately with that damn truck. Will be a good learning experience. Thanks again...Jack

Be advised that the scanner or code reader you plan to use on the 2000Silverado will not work on anything built prior to 1996. On those models, you can jumper 2 sockets in the vehicle plug to get the codes.

The scanners will work on both if you look at the one I suggested it has cables for both. The ones that cost more will work. The cheaper ones won't work. You get what you pay for in scanners.
