It's not happens so often.... a newbee and he's a master.

I'm impressed by the brass frame. I'm honest, I'm busy and I didn't read any word in the thread, just some of your writing and images. May you explain how you cut so well the brass plate? I'm used to work with etched metal but I have serious troubles to cut metal plates.

I'm tuned, this is one of those cool thread where you can't wait for next updates! Bravo! Thank you for the kind words, sir. I use a couple of different tools to cut the brass plate, depending on how thick it is. If it's really thick, I'll first cut it on the band saw, then smooth/shape to desired size with the dremel, files, sandpaper. If it's thinner, I use the dremel with a fiberglass cut-off wheel, then shape as before. Also for thinner material with straight edges, I'll use a pair of sheet-metal shears. Here is a photo of what I use...sorry the photo is kind of dark and thrown together...

Do you know we have also a (almost die) aircraft modeling subforum here on AF? Just exclusive club :D

Thanks for the answer. Looks me that there's not a "easy" way to cut brass sheets. May be I try to find a smaller thread for the band saw.

Hi G'man,

hope you don't mind me cutting across your thread BM1 but I've just been introduced to jewellers piercing saws at college.

http://tinyurl.com/8weqpv

These things are amazing and with practice you can cut very straight edges in 12mm steel with a blade no thicker than a hair! Best tool I've ever bought at £6! Go for the adjustable frame version and then you can use old broken blades too.

PS. the build is looking utterly fabulous BM1. That model looks a lot larger than 1/8th...have you got very small hands?!

I have a couple of those little gems, but couldn't put my hands on them for that quickie picture. They are awesome for delicate work, never really tried them for heavier stuff, though. 12mm thick, huh? I'll have to give it a try.
The kit is 1/8th and no, I actually have rather large hands... as my name says, I'm a foreign auto mechanic by trade, so that helps with my dexterity. My hands do get in the way, though. Thanks for the compliment, cingster...

PS where is your Porsche project? A 993 GT2 based on the Pocher kit is next on my bench... can't wait to dig into that one!:iceslolan:iceslolan:iceslolan

I always have a few kits going at the same time. That Stuka is a diversion... about half finished. I am building that and a Spitfire to hang from the ceiling in my office at my shop. They are the old mpc 1/24th scale kits... nice and big! I did see the aircraft forums... not as passionate about aircraft, though.
I have found the big metal shears to be the best way to cut sheet, so long as it's not too thick. The cutting blades are about 40 to 50mm long, so the cuts are nice and straight. Can't do much detail cutting with them, though.:2cents:

Alright, 4 more new pics of tonight's progress so far... I finished closing in the footwell on both sides, which leaves just the steering rack and swaybar mounts left to complete for the major stuff remaining up front. Now I'll have to move to the rear-end soon... It's nice when you use a piece for one side as a template for the other side and they actually fit as mirror images. That happened tonight when I was closing in the footwell. Makes you feel like your work is worthwhile... Here's the pics... Enjoy!

Not much progress tonight, but I did get the front shock mounts and steering rack mounts done and got the holes opened up in the rear main frame cross tube. These holes allow the shift linkage, engine computer harnesses and the coolant lines to pass through this big frame tube. I should have done this alot earlier... it would have been way easier!!!:shakehead:shakehead:shakehead

Anyway, enjoy the pics and thanks for looking!!!

First update this week... I decided to change it up a little and work on the bodywork a little tonight. Started out with the kit front-end and went to town with the dremel. I needed to open the giant hole in the center of the hood, enlarge the factory driving light locations, as these will become the headlight housings for the 95 LeMans version I am building and start to fill in the factory headlight openings, since these are non-existant on the LM version of the F40. Whats left is to fill and smooth the headlight delete panels I made from brass, cut-in 5 slots per side above the front wheel locations and cut-in a central NACA duct right above the hood emblem. There are more mods to be done, but that's enough for right now... Enjoy!!! :) :) :)

The Ferrari F40 is one litre less and in competition form still puts out 100 more Horsepower than the competition tuned Toyota/Lexus engine. Dont compare a Japanese car motor to a Ferrari motor. I suppose you could turn the boost up on the Toyota motor until it had more horspower and then blew up.

TT

I wouldn't know about that.

But I do agree, I wouldn't compare Toyota engines with Ferrari. Ferrari engines are a beast and pure orgasmic, but that's only until it blows up and catches on fire. :headshake At least I haven't seen Toyota engines catch on fire except for one. :grinyes:

Nice build on the F40 btw.

Your compliment is too kind... I never really thought I would build something to this level until I started working on it, so get your stuff back out of the dumpster and keep going. It's nice that everyone appreciates my progress, but it's no more complex than anything else we modelers do... cut up some parts and fix them together until it looks like something. The reference material, like any other project of this size, is really the key and I have been lucky to have a bunch of good reference. Plus the compliments help to drive you forward, also. It's not an exciting update, but I completed the front subframe, tonight. Most of the joints are cleaned up and now it needs wetsanded before I plate it. I will do a copper plate first to even everything out and then a nickel plate to simulate the polished aluminum finish on the 1:1 LM version. Okay everyone, as promised, here's a little mini tutorial on how I made the radiator...:)

Started off with some brass L channel and some tin sheet stock to form the "frame"...
http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/bmwmech1/100_2005.jpg
Then closed it up with a second piece of tin sheet...
http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/bmwmech1/100_2007.jpg
Then cut 2 pieces of radiator P/E from crazy modeler to cover the tin...
http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/bmwmech1/100_2008.jpg
Then used some smaller L channel to form the outside perimeter of the radiator core, trappeing the P/E against the tin...
http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/bmwmech1/100_2009.jpg
Then made 2 blanks for the "tanks" to go on either end from brass bar stock...
http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/bmwmech1/100_2014.jpg
http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/bmwmech1/100_2013.jpg
Shaped them with the dremel and soldered them on either side of the core...
http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/bmwmech1/100_2022.jpg
And finally added the brackets, tubes and pins to mount it with...
http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/bmwmech1/100_2021.jpg

And here it is mounted in the subframe...
http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/bmwmech1/100_2019.jpg
And attached to the chassis...

Mark

Hey Mark,
pretty much everything is hand-made, except the bodywork and engine, which is in the first few posts. Most of the bodywork will eventually be hand-laid fiberglass, since the kit pieces are white-metal and very heavy. All the brass frame is scratchbuilt and the styrene panels I'm doing for the interior are scratchbuilt. Actually, by the time its done, there won't be very many parts used from the kit. If you've not ever seen one of these kits in person, then it's hard to describe how mediocre the level of detail is OOB. There is a transkit available for them, which takes it into another realm, but there are still the inherent kit shortcomings which I decided to get around by building everything that was wrong, by hand. Judging by how much of the kit will not be used, you can see just how lacking I felt the kit was. As soon as I get the frame completely done and painted, the build should move along much faster... I have around 150-200 hours in the frame alone, so far, so it's been a huge undertaking, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, now...:):):)

Now my earlier post about the kit being very mediocre should make more sense.:)

I understand now. Basically a Pocher is just a BIG model rather than some super detail million piece kit. I have noticed similar things with some Revell and Tamiya offerings that have only been inlarged to make a bigger version of the subject.

I now realize that you had to do a ton of work to get all of your parts made to look so nice!

Keep it up,
Mark

Mark,
Yes and no... the older Pocher kits had parts counts in the 1500-2500 range, so they were million pats kits. They are called the classic series, but the newer, exotics series, the Testarossa, F40 and Carrera 993, are all in the 400-600 parts count range. Huge difference in the two, both in numbers and effective detail level. More stuff about Pocher you never wanted to know, right?:)

Nice fabrication work BMW! Great progress too. I've been quietly watching this thread with much interest. Are you using soft solder? Would you be willing to discuss your process? I'm particularly impressed with how you maintain alignment of all these parts in three dimensions while not disturbing previous work.

I agree with your general comments regarding Pocher kits. I built the F40 box-stock in about six intense weekend sessions without much drama. It was one of the first kits I built after returning to car modeling as an adult. My next project was the Pocher Bugatti 50T that took over a year of work at a casual yet consistent pace! I am about 80% on a Alfa 8C2300 Monza that has been on again off again for years now because of the level of detail I'm doing and the poor engineering associated with the kit. The great thing about Pocher's is that you can use them as a foundation for a project that comes about as close as one can get to the real thing.

Thanks CrateCruncher, my "process" is not top secret...lol, I use an Amercian Beauty resistance soldering rig, which if you don't know much about it, uses the resistance across the joint being soldered to create heat at the point of contact. It heats up very quickly and the heat is very localized to only the joint area, which means you can solder a piece right next to a previously soldered piece and not run the risk of de-soldering the first joint. It works kind of like arc welding, only with solder. That's how I can maintain alignment without affecting adjacent areas.

Your comments on the Pochers are right on, as well. I have a K74 Mercedes, that is about 1/2 complete and it's on a completely different level than the F40. Excluding the inherent kit problems, of course. Thanks for watching this thread, it should get more fun to watch, once the frame is painted and the real building/detailing starts...:)

Good information! I may want to build one some day if I found the right subject to get me going.

Have you seen the prices of the old kits recently. Too many saddo's are snapping them up, never to build them!

Really nice work BM, shame you've got to paint it! :(

Out of interest, does anyone know why the old 1/8th kits have never been re-released? I know the company and all their tooling was bought up years ago.

Thank you much for the "12 from 10 possible" compliment! Right now I am diligently working, trying to finish up all the small bits on the frame so I might be able to get it in primer tonight! I will update at some point tomorrow! Thanks to all for watching!!!:smile::smile:

At last, an update! Unless I have missed something, I believe the frame is finished!!!:):):) I still have many hours of prep before the main frame goes to primer, but some of the sub-assemblies are ready and I even got some pieces prepped and primed tonight! I also received my Brummel decal set from Manfred at m-tec, today, so I snapped a picture of them also. Enjoy!!!

I'm traveling this weekend, but I couldn't leave everyone without the latest photos to look at. Got the frame prepped and shot with 1 coat of primer last night. Still some thin spots and there will be some filling/sanding to do before color, but hey, at least it's grey now! There was alot of real estate to cover with primer... I realized that this frame is big, once I started to paint it!:smile::smile: Enjoy!!!
