I'd say your problem is probably related to your ac problem you have in another thread in which you probalby have a vacuum leak. Like I said there, you should listen for under the hood or under the dash for a loose, cracked or other break in a vacuum hose or connection. It would sound like a hissing or air sucking sound. It sounds like it may be pretty big. If you can't find it by sound, try spraying carb cleaner or starting fluid around the hoses and listen for the engine rpm to increase. This will occur where the leak draws in the spray. You can also use like a stethescope, a piece of hose or tubing to listen around the engine compartment for the location of the noise making leak. I would think with this condition you are having, you should have a check engine light on all the time. Oh, BTW, the vacuum line to the hvac controls is black and passes through the firewall where the ac lines enter the passenger compartment as well.
As I said in your ac thread, it would be helpful if you provide vehicle info on your van to help those who try to diagnose your problem and for those who try to use your problem, diagnosis and repair for their benefit.

I have a 1998 Windstar ( 3.8L) and was getting those 2 codes PO171 and PO174 which turned out to be a small vacumn leak. Mine was right brfore my PCV valve. The rubber hose colapsed some and there was a little hole. It was constantly stalling out and running rough. After I replaced the 4 inch hose, I disconnected my battery so the PMC would be reset. Runs like a champ now.
