since there's not much happening on the boards lately, i decided to post my latest project. i decided to put the widebody mr2 and hks altezza on hold as other members are currently undertaking those projects. hopefully this project will be done in time and make it into the itr contest. there's goinig to be some pretty fierce competition for this contest as this car is very popular among members of this board. this is my attempt to raise the bar :) .

this is pretty much a rough cut of what i plan on doing... just to make sure the body lines flow properly before i do any final sanding and smoothing out. as you can see, there are quite a bit of voids left still and to be honest, this thing is going to need alot more work. i plan on putting on some mirrors such as the ones pictured below on this kit as well. don't know if it'll look right but we'll see... anyhow, the color scheme is to be metallic blue and silver.

Thank God you know what you are doing with this kit!!!! A REAL widebody!!!!!1:p I am tired of seeing all these people who flare their fenders with stick on fiberglass and call it a widebody when they can't even run a bigger wheel than before their widebody attempt!! If you make a widebody you need to be able to run wider wheels hince the term WIDEBODY, so to sum it up.......GREAT JOB on this kit, keep it up!!!!! I can't wait to see it finished!!:D :D I did this same style widebody on my fujimi Integra I built 2 or 3 years ago but yours makes mine look like crap so good job:D

thanks for the comments guys:) ! this thing originally started out as a test project to challenge myself to create something utilizing all the 'how to' threads on here and plop them all into a hodge-podge of mods. fortunately it turned out fairly decent :D :) .

i don't know what to do about wheels yet. i messed up all the wheels that i have taking off the chrome plating. but fortunately daggerlee was willing to send me a set of his unused rims! :flash: thanks dan!! flash: can't wait for them to get here so i can see how they look on this thing!

brian:
the rear valance/diffuser is just a small piece of plastic laid over the area where the spare tire should be. however, you'll need to cut out that area and lay some pieces of styrene so that you'll get the right clearance from the bumper. i needed to cut out this area anyway just to get the exhaust cans in there. hope this makes sense.

hey, i just want to say, awsome work on ur ITR wodebody project, like i said in ur thread, im also workin on my own ITR widebody kit. i just want to ask you a few questions on ur car if thats ok?
1) what did u use for the actual wide body kit? like did u use pieces from existing kits? or all custom styrene work?
2) what kid of putty did u use?
3) what did u make the body line on the rear bumper. where the bumper connects to the body? it looks VERY clean and mine look very off.
4) can u explain to me how u made the rear bumper? and the hood?

thanks alot, now i know this is alot and u dontneed to answer all but ti would be very apreciative of this:)

1. the widebody work is made from scratch. it is mostly styrene laid on top of the existing body. however, you'll want to make the styrene a block skeleton. what i mean is to make it just over the wheel arches. this will give you a frame in which to apply the putty. my experience is that putty is easier to carve than styrene. i use polyester putty for this project. don't try to use this stuff if you don't have a respirator! the fumes are very hazardous to your health!

2. as mentioned earlier, i used polyester putty. i would recommend any type of polyester putty. the fumes are very hazardous as i've stated but they work wonders on a plastic model! it doesn't shrink nor does it go through an exothermic reaction. the biggest plus is that it is ready to sand in about 25min from the time you mix the hardener to the putty (shorter if you add a bit more hardener). again, don't use this stuff if you don't have proper ventilation and a good respirator to work with.

3. first lay down a couple layers of tape for the panel line to scribe. this will give you a guide so that your tool will not 'travel' out of the area in which the panel line should go. for the actual scribing, i used a sharp pin to 'scratch' out a rough groove and then used the back of an exacto blade. be careful here as putties may not work as well for scribing panel lines and may chip. styrene is the best material to scribe on. but on my project, i decided to give it a try. if it didn't work, i would use a very thin layer of styrene(.005 styrene sheet) to make the edge and sand it flush with the body. that would probably be the only way to go if the scribing failed.

4. the rear bumper extensions are made by layering the styrene sheet and sanding them down to conform to the rest of the car so that it flows with the natural lines of the car. making the wheel arches flow and even with both sides along with the front flares is the hard part.

hope this helps and i hope to see yours up on the boards as well!

per porkinporkchop's request... here's a few threads which helped me when i started out this project:

fotw's how to on scratchbuilding an intercooler (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=59570&highlight=how+to+intercooler)

cosmo6476's bettle thread (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t88347.html)

hirofkd's idea on scratchbuilding a air scoop (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=84750&highlight=mr2)

what these three threads have in common is that they all used styrene to help their scratchbuilding project take shape. styrene basically comes in either round or square tubes or rods as well as sheets.

fly's tutorial shows how to use styrene sheet to help plan out a basic shape and use putty (of any type) to smooth out and finalize the shape.

cosmo6476's build process on his wing illustrates very well how to sandwich styrene sheets for more complex shapes and how putty helps finish the part.

hirofkd's diagram in the last post is what most folks have problems with... envisioning and planning out how to create this 'custom' and complex shape. most people would ask what you used to build this and so forth but everyone on this board knows that already. the question you should all be asking is how would i start planning out to create this shape. that is where you'll get the most helpful responses. ask the right questions... and more specific questions... and the board will answer with creative ideas to scratchbuilding.

you can really see how i did this just by looking at the body itself. the white areas are styrene and the bluish green areas are putty. the styrene is used as the basic building material and the outty is used for the edges for smoothing out. if you look carefully enough, the fender flares are where most of the putty comes in while there is hardly any putty on the front and rear bumpers.

above all else, there's no replacement for trial and error. there's no other way to gain experience than to just jump in and try it. i can probably run on and on but it won't help you until you understand how to use styrene and putty effectively through trial and error. i hope this helps. if you have a specific question, i'll try my best to answer.

walter's suggestion seems to keep pecking at my lazy butt... i'm not an expert on turbos so i went on the net and got some information on them. i still don't know exactly where the plumbing goes but i guess i can still start on the pieceparts while i do a search. well here's me getting off my butt and starting my first attempt at a turbo. don't know if i can pull if off to an acceptably so we'll just have to see how the progress goes...

credit goes to walter (wkma7six) as i am referencing his turbo in his award winning itr and for giving me inspiration for this portion of the project :)

i start by using a pin vise to drill two holes into a piece of 40mil thick plastic sheet so as to accept the locator pins from the stock itr headers.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/244036manifold_mts02.jpg

by doing so, i am able to use the pin vise to make guides for cutting out a rough shape for the manifolds. after removing the kit part, i fill in the holes that i created with plastic rod so that the custom part i'm creating fits onto the motor where the kit part should.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/844407manifold_mts01.jpg

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/120820manifold_mts03.jpg

after a bit of filing, i achieved this basic shape...

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/661575manifold_mts04.jpg

since i can't find a suitable size for the piping, i decided to go about it the hard way and file down a piece of sprue. after a bit, i'm finally satisfied with the diameter. with a bit of heating, i am able to recreate a similar manifold as walter has achieved before me (haven't had time to sand it down yet so it looks rough and glazed due to welding of the plastic)

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/815101manifold_mts05.jpg

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/766000manifold_mts06.jpg

by heating another piece of sprue of the desired diameter, i made a loop and cut off one end. by heating it again, i did my best to correct the side which was cut off and filed it down to the desired shape. the last image is one of just a sprue shaped into a disk. this is going to be for the end where the exhaust exits. it doesn't need to be as complex as the intake side so i just made it easier on myself and made it into a disk.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/194779snail04.jpg

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/610848snail03.jpg

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/814211snail02.jpg

now all that is left is to glue in some plastic tubing to connect the pieces and we should be off and running. i want a tapered and stepped look to the intake of the turbine so what i'll most likely do is glue a smaller diameter tube inside another plstic tube. that way i can taper the inside of the larger tube while leaving the step of the smaller tube inside... just to give it a bit of dimension.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/485670snail01.jpg

that's all for now... have to get away from the model and off the computer before my girlfriend finds out that i've started 'playing' with this kit again :flipa: !

got a chance to take a quick pic while my sister came over with the digicam to take a pic of her kids. i changed the color scheme from blue and silver to red and black. i just got some new red pearl powder and was itching to try it out so i'll save the blue and silver scheme for another project. anyway, the pearls don't show up that well under my desk lamp so outdoor pics might be necessary to appreciate the actual color.

this kit is taking longer than i thought it would... the tubo setup that i made earlier looks a bit out of scale so i think i'll redo them... sometime... don't know when... seems like all my projects came to a standstill... hopefully i'll finish this one before the deadline as i don't have much time for hobbying as of late. anyway, here are two pics... sorry, but the pearls are hard to capture under this light.
