Act II (Start Müsik)

bLXUu0_V-WI

As the sun slowly sets behind the mountains, the three valkyries meet in the high tower of Schloss Überwürst. Over large steins of bier they relive the glories of their recent victories, while they plot their next conquest....

"Zo, next we will build ze Enthü Porsches, ja?"

"Jawhol, mit keine büstenhalter!"

"Ja, natürlich!"

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/varie/3brunhildes.jpg

(You will just have to imagine us without our iron bras.)

In 1948 Porsche built it's first pröduction car, the 356. To celebrate its 60th anniversary, we have decided to take on Füjimi's möst magnificent monüment to Porsche, car modeling, and över-engineering: the Enthüsiast Model 356. (Yes, the one with the pistöns included inside the engine.) Cönvertible ones, of course. :naughty:

There will be bier, phötoetch, phötoshop, machined parts, and many, many ünnecessary ümlaut- plus the usual nönsense. And maybe even some building.

Enjöy!

Hallo Kameraden.
Ich freue mich sehr, für diese zweite Kapitel :D

Before all I choose a model: it would be the 1,6 litres Speedster!!!!!
Than the problem to choose a color... There are several cool color in the '55-'65 Glasurit Porsche range... I imagined it Ivory, than Fjord Green, Black (with chrome trims...) but eventually I choose the awesome Ruby Red. Ever eventually it can't be the right colour (!!!!!) since my body shop has one unique code (Lechler) for any Ruby Red between '57 to '65... it come out a bit darker I guess (but we'll see polished to judge) and so I christen it "Magnificent Ruby Remole Deep Red" MRRDR if you like :D

Opps sorry let me show the model and the color, than I'll share my plan:

This must be the real Ruby:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/P356/555611.jpg
And here a Ruby Speedster (looks a bit photoshopped...)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/P356/resizer11php.jpg

Mine would be a racer, so not bumper and 1 seater soft cover:

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/P356/topLT-724261.jpg

The kit is so good that we started to wonder the build as OOB, than we shared 1 million ideas and we planned to add few special thouches: engine would have some great PE air filters

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/P356/resizer3php.jpg

I'm redoing the windscreen surround, since may be the worst kit's part, as well as the chrome speedster trims on sides and other stuff by PE.
The final result would be near the following, obviously in Speedster shape:

Fäntästic. It´s really nice to see how you guys loose your mind - make my madness seem less scary.

The projects are exciting. Let´s see which bathtubs the other two have up their sleeves.

Oh, and I´m not going to tell you what to look out after with the Enthusiast kits having done one myself in the past. Your german skills show that you are ´so gute Ingenieure´. You will do just fine.

P.S.: Keep the German coming :naughty: :naughty:

Guten Abend leiber autotiveforumsmaniakenfendelisheringugfunken!

I’ll doing the Competition version 365 Speedster.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/356A%20SPEEDSTER%20COMPETITION/356_01.jpg

I have absolutely no plans whatsoever about color, detailing or …. Anything.
Basically this is going to be a “go with the flow and move with the groove” build for me and I’ll see what comes up as I progress (but in all probability it will be a straight OOB build with a couple of wires in a few places :evillol: )

BTW, in case you were wondering, I’m the one in the middle that lööks like a transvestite version of Asterix the Gaul :D

I have started this project from the bottom and will be working my way up to the body a) to give me plenty of time to worry about body color and b) just in case I meet some fitment issues.

So far I have got most of the chassis and tub parts cleaned, primed and detail painted and have added the odd p/e bolt here and there.

Brake master cylinder has been plumbed

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/356A%20SPEEDSTER%20COMPETITION/356_18.jpg

Since the brake detailing will be invisible after assembly, I thought it would be a nice idea to cut out one of the molded-in access panels and let it serve its original purpose :evillol:
I later added some p/e screws to the hatch cover.

Hey Klutz, my friend.

You promised with the 250 TR that you would stop building the same kits as I do :iceslolan :iceslolan . Du sollst nicht lügen! Just to remind you: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=670202

Have you checked your trunk lid? Mine was warped beyond repair. I never got it to fully fit to the body.

The start looks promising though you found out that most of the detailing can not be seen afterwards.

Cheers

Great job Steve, I love the detail in the front compartment.

Done something, starting from the powerplant: we shared some ideas about the enine's parts fitting: looks like it's not perfect OOB: we guessed a solution may be cut and sand down all registration pins from each shell, glue parts (ex. cylinders) and carefully sand a bit the junction and scribe details with a PE saw. Looks like it work.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/P356/CIMG7217.jpg

It's not so noticeable from the picts (also the engine is microscopic..) but I played with several Model Master Metalizer shades: alu for the block and cylinders, Alu followed by Magnesium and a light shade of steel for the gearbox (so buffing you'll expose a bit of the edge's alu ;) :D), steel for the carbs. I washed all a couple times with thinned acryl black; carbs were washed with a orange/pink shade (Lifecolor tensio-active).

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/P356/CIMG7218.jpg

(yep I know not so noticeable: I'll try to do better pict outside when the engine is finished)

Than I decided to play a bit. I decided to do few PE but at last I designed a good set to detail the Carrera a and B/C: this would be for sale then as quick as I'll try all parts and the service etch me first production sheets.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/P356/CIMG7224.jpg

Obviously my TT partners would have my prototypes to use soon ;)

Following the paper and metal mesh oval air filters, you'll see the interesting wing nut: those is MPWR copyright :D, great idea buddy :D

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/P356/CIMG7226.jpg

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/P356/CIMG7228.jpg

And finally the very first fitting tests with carbs, fan cover and filters:

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/P356/CIMG7220.jpg

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/P356/CIMG7221.jpg

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/P356/CIMG7222.jpg

Parts are home made prototypes: I thrust pro etched PE I'll get would be better ;)

Done some job on the chassis: beeing a racer mine would keep the interiors painted, not carpeted. Shame I didn't before with all components (front sunspension is mounted yet) I wanted show the job in the "abacus" form, that looks trendy lately :D

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/P356/CIMG7229.jpg

Following some component's close up:

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/P356/CIMG7238.jpg

And finally a demonstration of this kit's philosophy: at last you'll see nothing of the details :D (or less, much less)

this kit's philosophy: at last you'll see nothing of the details :D (or less, much less)
Ain't that the truth!!

BTW In case you haven't already assembled it, be careful when putting the rear axle in the "box" because the axle has a right way round and a wrong way round (you can guess which one I chose :evillol:). The axles ends have semi-circular endings that need to fit into semi-circular holes on the suspension assembly - and they need to be the right way up! :D

Eh, i may not have that many posts here, but im following the forums since i'm registered. Your builds are one of those, which i talk about (Dude, know those guys on AF, Gionc, MPWR nad klutz? Ye, guess what they're up to now etc.)

Anyway, another astonishing topless trio =) I had to write a comment, since i know you're all bit crazy (in the good way), gio, why dont you cut that wheel like... half, to reveal the details? Not just the wheel, maybe even other things. Here is a example of what i mean, by a slovenian modeler, going by the name Mihec here.

Hi obl4k. Thanks for the comment: TBH a shared thread like this produce a positive energy (on us "owners" but also on the friends who follows the adventure trough the gags) that multiply the fun and help skills finding new ideas (I guess we are filling all Skype bandwith, any day we get a messy modeling brainstorm :D)

The cutout ideas: I'm wondering today that another cool one would be a full "abacus" in the way Tamy is selling their motorbikes now: but also the cutout would be a way to rend justice to this fantastic kit's series, I have in mind now some of my friend Alessandro Prini famous cutouts, like the Testarossa or the Enzo. For sure not this time :D, I'm more motivated to try to imagine this car as a track beast (ever relatively speaking, I'm not wondering to add a tuner's spoiler, huge fenders and big rims :D)

obl4k
09-14-2008, 04:12 PM
Well, a diorama could be combined with this well :P My mind is picturing a corner, with an older guy in the car, with the old racing hat and googles, driving. And dont forget the gloves, and the ''Feel the wind'' expresion on face :)

Anyway, im looking forward to your PE sets, and most of all the audi kit :P

BTW, the thing that makes me browse your builds more, is the machining-> Need to learn :P

MPWR
09-15-2008, 06:06 PM
Well then, here is some mächining.

I'm building the 356B/C Carrera 2 kit- the last and probably greatest 356.

I was going to take a pic of all the kit parts. But no, my workbench isn't big enough for all the parts of an Enthu kit. So just the engine.

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-001.jpg

Sure the car is fantastic, but this is the real reason I want to build this kit!

Of course Enthu kits have something of a reputation for fit issues. In building the engine, Gio and I quickly decided that if the cooling fins didn't align they would stand out. So it was worth some effort to get them right. Test fitting did not look promising- the cylinder halves just did not line up well. So the fix was to cut off the alignment pins, flat sand the parts, and fit them together 'freehand'.

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-002.jpg

After they were together, the gaps between the fins were cut out individually with a photoetched saw. A bit tedious and labor intensive, but it makes a terrific difference.

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-003.jpg

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-004.jpg

I'm not quite as far along on my build yet as meine kameraden. I've been keeping busy designing and making little machined bits for my engine. The rest of the car I expect to leave close to OOB, but the little aircooled boxer I could not leave alone. :grinno: So here are some bits:

Flanges for the carburetor intakes.

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-005.jpg

Alternator/cooling fan drive pulleys.

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-006.jpg

And of course distributors. The Carrera engine is a twin spark, and it has an elaborate looking wiring scheme for its twin distributors.

http://www.356carrera.net/imagens/mech-9.jpg

I just couldn't leave this alone. The kit parts are actually rather good, but they'd be difficult to drill out. So here are my replacements.

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-007.jpg

What will it all look like painted up and assembled? Time to find out! :grinyes:

I’ll never use the kit-supplied engine stand but I thought it is so cute, I painted it up anyway – might be useful in a diorama one day :D

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/356A%20SPEEDSTER%20COMPETITION/356_31.jpg

The under-chassis has beeen painted in a non-conformist color configuration.
The kit towing hook broke when I was removing it from the sprue so I made a new one with garden wire which actually looks better IMO.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/356A%20SPEEDSTER%20COMPETITION/356_25.jpg

I started detailing the gas tank by shamelessly copying SLKs ideas :evillol: (although the sensor wires are based on reference photos).

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/356A%20SPEEDSTER%20COMPETITION/356_26.jpg

When I test fitted, it was clear that the molded-in buckles on the holding straps are interfering with correct positioning of the main body.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/356A%20SPEEDSTER%20COMPETITION/356_27.jpg

The easiest and quickest solution I could come up with was to remove plastic from beneath the tank to allow it to sit lower.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/356A%20SPEEDSTER%20COMPETITION/356_32.jpg

I also changed my mind about the BMF straps and painted them satin black.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/356A%20SPEEDSTER%20COMPETITION/356_33.jpg

The muffler/exhaust is one kit part that looks pretty awful IMHO – it’s full of ejector and sink marks, is squashed rather than round and the end cap solution sucks big elephants’ ****

The other two drag artists in this thread will presumably be turning new ones on their lathes or but, being “lathe frei”, I had to try another approach.

Rather than put a lot of effort into cleaning up the kit part, I felt that overall it would be easier and quicker to make a replacement part using a section of aluminum rod of the same diameter the I happened to have in my workshop.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/356A%20SPEEDSTER%20COMPETITION/356_36.jpg

Since I don't have a lathe and the 6mm rod is too thick to chuck in my Dremel, the only way to add the ribbed effect was by adding material rather than removing it. I did this by adding strips of 0,25mm styrene sheet with CA glue

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/356A%20SPEEDSTER%20COMPETITION/356_37.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/356A%20SPEEDSTER%20COMPETITION/356_38.jpg

The nearly finished piece drilled out to add styrene rod and solder tubing.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/356A%20SPEEDSTER%20COMPETITION/356_39.jpg

And next to the orginal part. Not perfect but it will hardly be visible at the end of the day.
I will still add some small details to it though such as the clamps etc..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/356A%20SPEEDSTER%20COMPETITION/356_40.jpg

2: Steve I broke teh towing hook too.... :D and think I done the job carefully..

3: Take care of those yellow stand (awesome) and don't lost it cos I have something very special (and very challenging for your mind sanity :D and patience) in mind, TBH is yet in Illustrator :D...

4: I didn't found fitting problems between my tank and the body: for sure you can't see those straps but not collisions here... I'll post how I see...

I’m so glad you decided to do a trio again!! Congratulations and thanks!!!

Everyone of you in your own style give us a lot of teaching and tons of fun!!

I’ll follow this one very close, this car is one of my favorites, and Gio, I’m going to need one of those PE, keep us posted when they are on the market.

Great work your guys are posting. Entertaining thread and some inspiring ideas on work and detailing methods.

Question Klutz: How on earth do you come up witht the idea to rebuild the muffler system using stuff that is basically just laying around?? This leaves me puzzled and sprachlos!

Andy, I´m once again very impressed by your machining abilities. Making these small parts just for the engine which will be hardly seen once finished: Dedication, dedication, dedication.

Once you guys are finished I suspect every single part of a Porsche 356 Enthu kit being modified by one of you guys. :naughty:
I sit back and keep enjoying this!

There is just one little thing, don't believe anybody if they say your german is fantastisch... they just want your machined and/or PE parts because it is pretty much scheisse

Then no metal parts for you! :grinno:

Ah well.... the trio of insanity strikes again.

Great start to an interesting project! I am sure you'll amaze us even more than in the previous toples builds! Just one question: will the PE set be available from automobilminiaturen.de (http://www.automobilminiaturen.de) ?

Keep up the inspiring work!

Cheers from Germany

Güten tag, meine freunde!

Lately, I've been amusing myself during some nice weather by suffering through some bodywork. Sure, the detail in Enthü kits is nice, but the body parts fit on this one needs some real work. The big problem on the 356B/C body is the bönnet.

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-008.jpg

Not easy to see on the white body, but the bönnet sits too deep in the body, so there are significant steps on either side.

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-009.jpg

I thickened the edges with epoxy pütty, so that the bönnet edges were flush with the body.

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-010.jpg

Then it's just a matter of sanding it down and making it all even....

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-011.jpg

The bönnet is fitted in place, so both the bonnet and body can be sanded together until the fit is perfect.

Sand, fit, sand, fit, prime, sand, fit, prime, sand, prime, sand, fit....

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-012.jpg

And on and on until....

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-013.jpg

Finally! Greatly improved. This is maybe two weeks of rather tedious effort. I'm really not a fan of pütty work, but it's satisfying when it comes out. The primer has been sanded until it (almost) shines.

The chrömed parts in my kit was really rather poor.

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-014.jpg

The parts of coürse have plenty of flash and sink marks- but even the chröme itself is barely present.

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-015.jpg

See all the dark spots? No, it's not dark reflection. That's where chröme didn't quite get applied. (Notice the almost bare headlight reflectors?) No choice but to strip it all off, and redo it in Alclad.

But to avoid any Enthü fit surprises, I decided it was best to at least fit the chrome parts so I didn't discover something nasty after the body was painted.

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-017.jpg

Happily, they all fit. Now I'm getting excited about this one!

Porsche Bali Blau

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb112/andrejmiller/356-018.jpg

OK, really it's Tamiya TS15, but it's rather close.

Ready for some clearcoat and chröme! :sunglasse

And maybe some photoetch....

What a truly fantastic looking car! Great job on the bonnet. When you sand it then prime it so often, how do you avoid the primer flooding up the panel lines, grills details etc? Are you just re-scribing the lines every so often? Or controlling where it sprays on, using airbrush primer? Thanks.

Nice! You are a wise man dryfitting everything. Paint looks nice. Never seen a 356 with this color. Good luck with the next steps!

Thanks güys!

When you sand it then prime it so often, how do you avoid the primer flooding up the panel lines, grills details etc?

I airbrush my primer, and I use alot of redücer in it. The initial coat gets sprayed without much thinner (to much redücer on bare plastic will etch), but later coats get thinned so they flow better and texture less. This also helps keep details clear. I have to clean out sanding dust from panel lines before respraying, but tracing them with a toothpick does that.

Never seen a 356 with this color.

Bali Blau was apparently a rare 'special color' on early '60s 356s. The pics make it look brighter than the color actually is (the primer also is grey, not white  ). I've been editing the pics a bit to show detail a bit better.

That 356 looks familiar, Andy...

It shoüld! :grinyes:

Finally very much desired Rüby Red is up!
Very strange colör: needs a lot of light to express himself at his best! In teh workshop is almost bourgogne/maroon but just expose it at the daylight and he switch to red, with bourgögne shadow and pink reflex..... in a word... great Italian Red (obviöusly I meant thöse you'll drink!)

Work was everithing the same: accurate primer job, polished with 2K 3M paper, acryl barrier to seal plastic with white acrylics primer, and straight the Ruby! Obviously every step well polished several times.

Ruby not yet polished, ah, I forgot to mention: this is not matt base we're used, I wanted to use same stuff like before the 2K clears over '70: this is hard solvent (toluene) gloss color, applied in several (10-12?) thin layers, before last two wet coats I polished everything with 6K mesh. Now it show a fine orange peel, we'll see how to do (since the color is a bit transparent you'll wreck all if you expose a lighter red or worst the white primer).

Can't wait to have it polished to show off PE and scratchbuilt windshield/surround.
