Ever been victim to a Sleeper?

Have you ever raced someone and figured no way you were gonna lose and you did?

It happened to me at New England dragway. I was up there in my stang averaging about 12.6. I beat every car I raced that day, there were some I didn' think I would but I did and was feeling pretty good about myself.
So my second to last run of the day I get lined up agianst this 80's Monte Carlo that was 4-5 different colors one being primer. Up there your windows have to be closed so I couldn't really hear his car. I also didn't bother looking for the huge slicks he had tubbed in the back.
The tree goes of and we both jump, pretty much even. Except I notice that his front end really picks up. Just as this thought goes through my head, the rear of his car is at the front of mine. I'm screaming for my car to go faster as he just keeps getting farther away. He beat me bad!!!! I get the timeslip and I see mine 12.58 and then look at his 9.44!!!!!!!!!!!!
My friends who mostly have Camaro's though it was friggin hilarious.

Went looking for a race haeding into town ,came across a toyota corolla yellow with stock looking alloys, got side by side and as i noticed the monster tacho it was all to late by about 300 meters he was 4 or 5 lengths ahead. i just laughed.:mad:

After I thought it was funny but while it was happening I was definetly missing the humor:D

This was about 2 years ago before I did my motor swap. I was sitting at a light one night minding my own business when this guy pulled up next to me in a Buick. I didn't think anything of it, but when I looked at him I knew he wanted to race. I was like what the hell, I'll give it a round. Next think I knew he was pulling away like a bat out of hell. It was then I noticed he was in a Grand National. Oops :eek: Oh well, it was a nice car though!

Yep and suXuOrs big time!

Right after getting the GTR. Still pretty standard. Going to work and some guy in a little mitz mirage paces me. For those unfamiliar with one it is a little peanut box with a 1.8 MIVEC N/A motor in it. I figured I would just shit all over this guy and chucked it down to 3rd while doing 100kms. He did the same and dissapeared up the road with my jaw hitting my lap!

Later came to find out he had dropped a Series III Evo motor into along with the running gear. He also had a T06 turbo in it with a host of other mods. This little car would weigh more than 500 kgs (1,100 lbs) less than me and was pushing more hp than me! OUCH :eek:

ouch that sucks, to have a lengendary car get beat by a little shit box with a shit load of guts.

Raced a very modified GNX that was plated as a regal....

Dang.. must be ultra quick to walk you, R-1..

Reminds me of the first time I went to the dragstrip and all the cars where lined up waithing for the gates to open. Most cars where on trailers and modded to the hilt and there is this bone stock looking neon in the middle of the line, complete with plastic walmart hub caps and rusty tailpipe. So, me and my brother where joking that at least there was one car there I could beat. Well, the laughter ended when I raced it, smoked me by quite a bit, running in the low 12s. Kind of look a litte different at neons now.

Yep. Was waiting at a light with my bone stock N/A 7, and an older escort pulls up. I see the guy give me the race look and i thought "are you kidding?" he wasn't. When the light went we were pretty even, and at about 115 mph down rt 20 in westfield (HiFlow would know where that is) he inched me out. Then i noticed his not so stock width tires and exhaust. And im sure he had something under the hood too.

now i had a S/c GTP with me at the light (WS^) .. and the mf took off when i looked down.. i didn't think he wanted to race... though the next light i exacted a great measure of revenge when i ran my cAR UP TO 140 ON A CITY ROAD AND LEFT HIM SO FAR BACK THAT WHEN HE FINALLY MADE IT TO THE NEXT LIGHT HE GAve mad props... Silly man even a bone stock Ws6 would smoke a GTP and mine is obviosly not stock you hear the cam the exhaust the lowering and the drag radial if you perceptive

When I first got my stock Supra Turbo I went out and was doing a lot of street racing in it and was doing fairly well. I rolled up to another Supra at a light and as I rolled up I noticed the lack of a Turbo sticker on the back(not that Supras are sleepers though). I figured it would be nice to teach him a lesson in Turbo'd power. When the light turned green his tires stuck hard and he beat me like a red-headed step child. he pulled on me by at least 5 car lengths in less than a quarter mile. When I finally caught him at the next stop light he told me he had done a 2jz-GTE swap and was running a 100 shot of spray as well. He said his car dyno'd at around 500 rwhp...plenty more than my stock motor was putting out...so the building began.

but in my defense! I just found out yesterday that my 5th and 6th ports arent opening at all, which is flattening out my powercurve after 3800 rpm. Damnit! this whole time! and my A/F is running too rich also. Heh, after im done fixing my car, im gonna kick nate's celica's ass.

I got pulled over once in Westfield for something I didn't do, I just fit the "profile." I had a Jetta next to me with an exhaust louder then mine at a light on rt. 20. He wanted to race, but I didn't want anypart of it. Light turns green and he stays next to me, he keeps revving and speeding up and slowing down. Then finally guns it and turns off the road. 2 seconds later a cop pulled me over and accused me of racing, saying he could here me from a long distance off revving the piss out of my car. He ended up giving me a ticket for "failure to use caution when starting" and no front plate. He was such a .......!

Hiflow... You shoulda threw couple rev's for Mr. Piggy and told him to knwo the difference between a 4 banger and a fucking american v8... well that is unless you were driving the 4 banger stang..

A few weeks ago, I was out driving, and I catch up with a what looks like a stock Opel Omega, he's going a few miles under the limit, and I decide to pass him. I had just put on my summer tires/wheels, so I was a bit lead footed. Well, I passed him, and was doing ~100kmh, so I look in my rear view mirror, and I saw a hood that don't belong on a stock Opel Omega.
Next thing I know, he's on his way past me. A few seconds later, he was way ahead of me. I tryed to keep up with him, but he was long gone.

The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced it was a Lotus Omega :eek:

Damn IT! It has rained here the past 5 yes 5 weekends! I can't go out for the life of me! And when I do no one ever wants to race! DAMN IT!:mad: :D

one time i was cruising with about 4 other of my import friends, and this stock looking new firebird pulls up next to them and starts revving. well, since none of them can give him any contest (:( :hehehe: ) i decide to go defend import honor to some redneck who thinks he's bad in his stock firebird. so i get up behind him, and rev at him, we're going ~40 mph, and we both gun it. his car makes a sound that a stock firebird should not make, and gets a little sideways at 40mph trying to keep it in a straight line. he takes off, and i'm just left thinking "well, that was neat :( "

damn straight! I almost pooped my pants when i realized how fast we were going. Plus we were both squealing to come to a stop at the wal-mart lights. That was fun.

And westfield cops are not the worst. UMass cops are. I gotta pay 75 smackers cause a umass oinker said i was doing 56 in a 30, when i was riding on my teeny weeny little donut. Grr.

My friend drives a stock bodied focus hatch (haha), and he runs.. 13.5 (:eek: ). My team prides itself in whiping some bodykit wearin , fart-can sporting, more-stickers-than-horsepower>>> ricers. It funny how they underestimate a stock-bodied integra when it can stay on the tail of a stock turbo supra ,which runs 13.5, just in case you didnt know ;)

My other friend has an an eclipse that runs 13.5 with a stock body, but that's normal for a DSM :)

DSM's, or anything powered by the 4g63T, ussualy do fast time so it's not suprising to see an eclipse run 13.5 at a drag strip. But if you saw a focus run 13.5, THAT's impressive :)

yeah, i know the DSM can be made fast... but your post it looked like you ment it as they do that stock and its nothing normal.

DSM's can be wicked when tunned right.

i got beat by a Civic Si once ..............that was not cool i have no idea what he did but he must've had 200hp i beaten preludes and celica GTS's so i have no idea what that civic was on :bandit: never the less it beat teh (RIP) volvo

i was in my moms pontiac montana. 3.5L V6 or something, 184 HP. anyway i pulled up to a light, some old southern-boy type car pull up next 2 me. i hear the duallies, i was like oh thats cool. so the light turns green and hes like flooring it, so i was like lets see about this, i gradually floored it and a the tourqy van pulled ahead of him it was hilarious.:licker:

Speaking of minivans, I drive a Lumina APV and get schooled on a regular basis (or at least by those that take me seriously).

The motor in my pos is a 3.1L tbi that is rated at 120hp/170ftlbs. This *power* is brought to the pavement via the ever vigilant 3spd auto. I have put on a K&N filter and removed my intake resonator and ducted air in from under the fender. I plan on getting a new exhaust this summer (to make it sound ballsy anyway). Other than that, there ain't much hope for it. Unless I went nuts and swapped the tranny for the 4spd and the engine for the 3800 option, that would at least allow me to bolt on a supercharger. But with no real money to spend and no place to work on it, I'm sol.

So, I'll just have to find more 3cyl. Geo's that wanna run for their money. But I'll take on about anything just to be a sport.

I mean no disrespect in ANY way, but why would you wanna spend money on a van? Are'nt you better off building something that was meant to go fast from the beggining? or at least ahve potential for speed?

Ok- let me explain why I have this pos.

I'm in college, so I needed something with room to haul my stuff. And, it was fairly cheap. Also, since it is an all fiberglass body, I won't have to worry about it rusting away (roads are heavily salted in the winter here in IA). So, it basically serves the purpose of being a workhorse.

And I plan on keeping it through college until I get a decent job and can buy a real car (because the fastest car I've ever owned was a v6 corsica <- very sad).

I have one of those sleepers :)

Did you get the V8 Conversion kit from JTR? (Jags That Run)

The JTR conversion uses the Chev small block, I am using a Ford small block that is dyno'ed at 350HP. I started off using the Converse kit but it was such poor quality I ended up remaking everything so you might as well say I did not use any kit. The conversion with relativly simple taking about 120 hours.

I have a new engine in the works that will put out about 450HP, should be even more fun.

Other mods include; Ford racing close ratio 5 speed, iPd lowing springs 2", 25mm sway bars front and rear, Bilstein shocks, Brembo brakes, MSD ignition, and much more.

What does that volvo run 1/4 mile?

With the current engine 12.7 @ 111mph and yes I do have some traction problems that are being worked out

Luckily we do not have emissions testing, which of course allows a little more creativity with engine combinations and modifications.

ahh yes the legendary sleeper. i've had this happen to me. i pulled up to a red light in my '69 vette. and what looked like a bone stock neon. i looked his car over and then saw the driver was giving me that "wanna go?" look. so i revved my beasty v-8 and he nodded. when the light turned green i pulled out ahead of him i thought i had it in the bag but he blew past me as he hit third gear. and i noticed his car wasn't stock at all i was staring down his dual 4" chrome exhausts. needless to say he ended up beating me by a car length. low and behold i saw him at the same stoplight later that night and i asked him to pull over and show me what's under the hood. turns out he had a stage 3 greddy turbo and the best intercooler money can buy. along with a slew of other mods.:(

:hehehe: atleast u tried? biggest sleeper so far was a del sol. frien told me the kid jus had a single cam w/ simple bolts...but then during the race, the kid ups an moves out about a car an a half (he was about 3/4 of a car back 1st an 2nd gear) AHEAD of me. i was like "der..." finally he admitted to running a turbo but ONLY at 6psi...lol...damned light cars w/ more power...

I got destroyed on my R1 by a Grand National plated as a Regal, and it looked very stock from the side. I didn't get to look under his hood, but I could probably list off the mods he had done anyway, if I were to guess he was pushing probably around 600hp.

It's not a "sleeper" story, but one of my good customers (really GOOD customers) just had his Viper supercharged with a custom set-up and a fully strenghthened long-block. Monday he came by to show me his car's new-found fangs, all 880+ of them!! While we were driving around warming it up, along comes a guy on a Ninja crotch-rocket making all kinds of noise. Ward dropped the Viper into 2nd (at 45 mph), nailed the gas, and smoked the tires for about 50 feet before chasing the Ninja down like a cheetah catching an antelope. The biker was kinda shocked too and I doubt he'd ever had a car run him down, ever! We hit 140 WAY to fast and I can honestly say, this car scared me like no other street car ever has!! I've driven many fast cars and my Camaro has over 500 street-driven horsepower, but this Viper is just plain insane! Ward did stop and see me today, he's snapped 6 lug-studs off of the rear so far and needed some stronger pieces...

I know nothing about bikes except that my Camaro hasn't run any of the big-bore bikes down yet. I'll try to get a pic of Ward's Viper on here soon.

My Camaro has been all over AF forum, look around and you'll fnd it. The 305 was removed years ago and I currently run a long-rod 350 with a short-block made mostly of retired Winston-Cup parts, Viper 6-speed, Corvette rear... One cam I was running recently had it pushing 545 hp but it was too aggressive for street use IMO and made the car a pain in the arse to drive daily. I'm at about 505hp currently with a GM HOT cam package.

Actually he did beat me from a roll, I didn't do a race launch, but I didn't bog it down either. GNs have very nice tubbies in the back, and have incredible launches even at stock power.

93 or 94 eclipse. after lite turned we went down the road and i mashed on the gas.

either this guy had a 300 shot of nos or a 700hp engine, because he shot like a bullet straight up the road. musta been 0-60 in less than 4.

This crappy ass looking '65 mustang beat me. Rust everywhere, bondo in places where there should be sheetmetal, all that good stuff. He beat me by about a car going to 60 mph, it was embarassing. Apparently the guy had a not-so-stock 302 swapped in instead of the 289 it came with. It still sucked though, it was the most beater looking thing I've ever seen.
