Montero 4wd light????

I have a 2002 full sized Montero 4wd (not Montero sport) and the 4wd light started flashing tonight out of the blue. It hasn't been ran in 4wd other than the typical "run it to keep it lubed". I fooled around with it a bit and it finally went off. I locked it in 4 high and ran up the road a mile or so and unlocked it. The light flashed again like it wasn't unlocked but I'm sure it was because while on dirt I held the brakes and gave it enough gas to make the back tires spin just to make sure it was unlocked. I finally got it to stop flashing and came on home. I'm sure that is a code that the system gives but unfortunatly I don't have the manual for it. Does anyone know what the thing is trying to tell me? Thanks.

If it does it again, try shifting into 4wd and drive a little, then shift it out of 4wd on an uphill road. Put it in Reverse, and let it idle backwards, occilating the throttle from engine brake to very slight accel, and weave it side to side slightly. All this unloads the 4wd "clutch" and lets the actuator disengage itself. I think yours runs on vacuum, so a high manifold vacuum (snapping the throttle closed as you go from accel to engine braking as you roll backwards) helps the actuator.

I think your 4wd light uses a comparator to see if the VSS agrees with the signal generator mounted on the back end of the transfer case front wheel drive output shaft, and if it sees the same speed, it lights the instrument panel light. If the speeds differ, it doesn't.

Ok. The light now flashes all the time when not locked into 4wd. I gave the suggestion a try and it didn't stop. I'm sure the 4wd is unlocking, but the light still flashes. By what you said i'm taking it that there is a possible fault in the sensor on the back of the transfer case that tells the light to come on and go off. Something I didn't mention in the original post was that the light just came started flashing without the 4wd being locked. We were just leaving the driveway on a short trip not using the 4wd. The SUV has also been sitting unused for about 2 and 1/2 months over the summer while I was away on business. This was about the third short trip (10 miles) we had used it since I came back. I haven't had a chance to check the sensor yet but it seems that could be a cause. Either way if anything else comes to mind to anyone all help is appreciated. Thanks.

Drive it around in 4wdHi for a while, then shift it to 2wd and try my stuff again.

Well, I've tried everything I know and its now flashing all the time except when it is locked into 4wd and then it is illuminated like is is suppose to be. When in 2wd it flashes all the time now. I've tried driving it around a while in 4wd and doing the recommended steps. It doesn't change anything. I crawled under it today and checked all the connections going to the transfer case and everything seems to be plugged well and non are burnt or corroded. Like I said earlier it does change in and out of 4wd, but the light doesn't go off it just flashes so it has to be a problem with the sensors or something and not the actual drive unit.

There are like 5 switches for the 4wd that tell the computer what is going on with the 4wd. If one of them fails, it blinks the light. Most of the time it is because the switch is corroded from non-use. Get someone to pull the code for the 4wd, 9/10 its just a bad switch.

Ive got this problem again with my POS montero. First time it finally one day dissapeared, but it is back and not from driving so much with it on, it seems the driver side CV joint is going as I here it squeecking when I back up with the wheels turned sometimes especially every time backing up my steep curved driveway. No good.
I know I had read somewhere about it being the wheel speed sensor. I have a scan tool I can try to use to pull codes.
Well please post a reply if you got info somewhere else...im off to join another forum.

I was having this exact same problem......the vehicle's 4wd lights blink, transmission trys to shift itself from 2wd to 4wd uncommanded etc etc ,.. all the same problems everyone is having.........this had been occurring for about 4 months and I trieed everythng except.......replacing the battery.....once I put in a fresh battery .......no more problems......vehicle has been perfect from that moment.....I guess the system needs a fully chargeable and charged battery.....my ole one was 8 years old.........try it.....it works where all these other solutions did not.
