May have jumped the gun and started tearing out my transmission (3.4 automatic 2002) Have both axles off, the support frame underneath is out. Does the engine need pulled out to get tranny off or whats the easiest way-lower it and pull off. any suggestions would be appreciated

I tried to do it myself because i didnt want to put $2500 into a vehichle w/ 165,000. Most mechanics said they wouldnt do it if it was their car, one said i would be stuck w/ fixing anything that went wrong for the next 3 yrs. (trans warranty). No manuals, changed a rear wheel drive on a mustang i had. Front wheel drive was a learning experience. Started wrenching anything i thought needed to be remove (basically both front wheels, axels, supports, motor mounts) Spent about $450 (350 for junkyard trans, 50 in gas to go get it, and another 50 for fluid, a compression fitting for the line i snapped raising engine and tranny back up, and filter). If i had a funnel that fit filler neck i would be all set. No extra parts, i was happy w/ that, and no extras hanging and not plugged in, but hopefully it will be back on the road and running fine, but i wont know til tomorrow. I really had nothing to lose when i started because i was going to scrap it until i found that tranny. Who knows if that is any good though.

this is understandable....but why did the transmission need removal ?

replacing this type of transmission is as you now know is alot more difficult than that mustang..but at least now you have the knowledge of how this is replaced..having the service manual or a helper to guide you would have been a time saver....I my area the scrap yards are very good at determining the condition I hope this turns out good for you....
