2000 LS steering rack

Has anyone here changed their steering rack by themselves? I just had a local state inspection garage tell me that my steering rack is leaking and therefore failed inspection. I don't really feel like spending $500 - $800 to have it replaced at a garage (2 different garage estimates. Obviously, I would go with the $500).

My car is a 2000 LS with 3.8L.

I'm capable of doing most car work myself, but I need to know just how involved of a job this is.

Your getting to a job you haven't done before. Go to http://www.alldata.com/
buy a years subscription for your vehicle. They used to be $90.00 to $100.00 for a rebuilt rack delivered. Probably around $250.00 at this time. The hardest part is disconnecting the oil lines. You will need two combination wrenches for the tie rod ends. Be very careful and use two wrenchs on the oil lines don't bend them.
A couple of bolts on the main support to remove.
You will need a floor jack and jack stands. Plan on most of a day doing it by yourself.
Measure the distance between the two front tires and set the same when done.
