98 Sable shuts off after long trips

I'm looking to purchase a 98 Sable. From a little old lady for a easy 1,000. Good body condition, just a little crack in the bumper. Good deal right? Well It needs a new tension Pulley. And she tells me that After long trips, say 100 miles the car will just shut down. Perhaps it won't start after a while. I have it in mind to think of a sensor, but which one? Or something maybe a little to pricey to deal with? I'm going into college in the fall so I need something reliable. If anyone has any experiance please post. Thanks!

I'm having a similar problem with my 96 Sable. Except that it does not matter how long the trip. It will just shut off while driving down the road. I've been thinking sensor as well, especially since it seems to be causing some idling problems...my research has pointed me in the direction of a cam shaft position sensor. About $80 for a mechanic to replace part and all. However, would the woman be willing to let you take it for a diagnostic test at say Auto Zone or shop? They might be able to pin point for sure.

I've gotten several ideas regarding the cause for the symptoms:

1: Column mounted ignition switch

2: Crank position sensor

3: Pick up Coil? (not really sure about this one)

4: Cam shaft position sensor (probably more likely)

But definitely get a diagnostics done on it BEFORE you buy it!!
