Tomorrow I will be going to look at a 1998 SL1 with 135,000 miles and automatic tranny. I want to get at least a consistent 32 mpg doing about 50/50 cty/hwy driving. The EPA is about 27/37. Can I get what I want in fuel economy in this car without going to a manual tranny?
Thanks

If you do a full tune up on the car when you get it along with possibly a new set of tires (tires are reallyyy important. I gained 2 mpg with properly inflated michelins :) ), im sure you can reach 35mpg. I get around 38-39 in my SL1's and abour 33 in my SL2.

I realize there is 2 years difference in your SL1 and the 1998 I am looking at. Hopefully the mileage is similar.
I went and looked at today. The lady said she has been getting around 30 mpg in what was described as a similar commute as mine. She said she gets 35 hwy. The engine was replaced at about 95k with a used engine that had about 65k on it. Overall it was in good shape. It had very new looking BF Goodrich tires. She is asking $3000. I don't think I am about to go more than $2400. But I really want to be comfortably in the low 30's mpg consistently in my commute. Not sure it will do that.
