Clicking in front,steering

I have this new noise now,when the car is not moving and i turn the steering wheel left to right i have this clicking noise,not a clunk.it is not the intermeiate shaft,just replaced it,when i drive the car and turn left to right it is not there,wondering if the cradle may be loose,checked everything else,wheel bearing bolts,front caliper brackets,lug nuts,sounds like a light metal clicking as in when your a/c compressors kick in and out

check the front end componets for wear.. jack up both wheels together and check for wear and play at all joints....if fittings are there, use grease gun to add grease, if they won't take grease they are most likely rusted and will fail shortly..

could be worn or damaged steering rack

Its actually a common thing with Impalas, you can take it to a mechanic and get the steering column greased for about $75. You could do it yourself, but I don't know how. Its just a design flaw, it isn't dangerous but it is annoying and will turn into a grating sound and stiff steering.

Heres how:

Easy Way: 20 Minutes (what some dealerships do)
1. Turn the steering wheel from center 1/4 turn left so that you can more easily access the ISS yoke.
(Turn the steering wheel from center 1/2 turn left (upside down) so that you can more easily access the upper bolt on the ISS.)

2. Remove the black trim panel, disconnect the light and then remove the fuse panel cover. Remove two screws holding the lower dash panel, pull to the rear of the car and away from the dash. If you try to move it up or down and not straight back you risk breaking the tabs. Unplug the trunk switch to remove the panel from the car.
3. Pull back the black boot that covers the ISS and spray the grease down into the opening.
4. Reassemble the lower dash.
5. Drive, be happy.

Basically if you can contort yourself, you don't have to remove the black backing piece. Best thing to do of course is use the white lithium spray grease, fit the tube inside the knuckle and spray like crazy.




But He said its NOT the ISS Clunking.

I have an 08 with the clicking sound also. Went to dealership today to have them evaluate as we are going on a trip. They are going to replace the rack and pinion on Friday. Hope this is a one time thing. Had ISS replaced in June due to the same popping I had in my Silverado.
