95 windstar, 3.8L, AT, 125K. CEL came on and code 1405 was the result.the rubber hose attached to the dpfe had a small hole and the inside is blocked with a lots of white dried stuff. I replaced the hose and it works fine now. I would like to know what causes the code 1405 and if I need to replaced the dpfe. Thanks

Code 1405 means The DPFE sensor upstream hose is off or plugged. Seems to me you already knew this since you had figured out you had a leaky hose. The DPFE measured an inconsistent pressure condition with normal operation. The reading at the upstream hose sensor was too low. I am surprised you didn't get that code sooner since you had that white powdery junk plugging it. Possibly, that is why the hose developed a leak. My DPFE also was plugged up. Consider yourself lucky that yours still works. I couldn't get mine cleaned out far enough inside for it to work properly. Basically, your DPFE works based on the fact it gave you an accurate problem code and you say it works fine now, which I assume means you no longer have a CEL or codes. Have codes cleared if hasn't been and if no codes show up after a couple of cold to hot to cold to hot cycles, it should be ok. Sounds to me like you did fine without us so far.

trippledaddy, thanks for your reply. My windstar runs fine so far after I replace the upstream hose and cleared the code by autozone. As I said earlier, the rubber hose had a lot of white powdery stuff inside and a small hole. Does that means that my dpfe is going to fail soon and need to be replace?

Since my crystal ball and clairvoyance aren't very good, I don't know how long it will last.:dunno: :naughty: :grinyes: I can only share with you my experience with mine and my analysis of that. The white powder is the aluminum cast body oxidizing/disintegrating. Mine did that inside the sensor tubes to the point that it plugged it deep inside around a corner that I couldn't clean out. The sensor tubes also were disintegrating to the point that there wasn't much length to one to keep the hoses on. I think it started to code some, probably because of the blockage, but I think the electronics were still functional per comparison to spec and a new dpfe. Wife trumped me, it got replaced. No big deal there.

Bottom line, as long as it functions as it should, no codes, and is still physically intact enough to use, then it should be fine. If you aren't comfortable with it and are willing to spend $50-60, then replace it. To avoid a repeat of the unit turning into powder again, there are some made with a polycarbonate body that shouldn't do that. I usually run things into the ground, :silly:so there is no doubt that I can't use it any more. Some might say I use and repair things beyond their usefulness , like my F in law:angryfire :bricks1: :madsign: :swear: He can be a real PITA. Oooo, maybe I'm little too strong there, nah.

I would not worry about the DPFE at this point.
It IS a high failure item on the post '95 windstars.....I don't know about the '95, but would imagine that it is.
SO...if you get a EGR flow code, then look at the DPFE again.

Tripletdaddy, I expect some static again when I visit my parents......my father always starts nagging at me when I get around 100K miles on a car.
I tell him "I'm just getting it broken in....all the bugs worked out of it....and you want me to start all over again?"
I am at about 195K now.....and have been hearing about how the market is good for buying a car right now from my father for a few years now.
It is a parent's job to worry.
My '96 is starting to look a bit rough now......after an exceptionally rough Wisconsin winter....some rust is showing up at the bottom of the body in a couple places.
Like you, I am just too cheap to replace something that is running just fine.....and is still solid.
Last spring, my mechanic told me that he thought that we would see 300K miles out of this unit.......and I asked...."how much will I pay to feel that way about another vehicle?"
So I keep the same one.
Although he did say that most vehicles at this age, and miles, are not worth much in repairs.
He said that mine is a rare one.....well maintained.

The point that I would share with others in the forum....
Keep on top of the maintenance.......and it will save you in the long run.
