Check engine light question?

My service engine soon light came on and I took it to autozone they ran the test. Code P1441 came up. It said it had to deal with the EVAP System Flow During Non-purge Condition. The explanation was the ECM has detected vacuum flow to the fuel tank Pressure (FTP) sensor during a system sealed condition. The Probable causes are
1. Failed canister purge solenoid
2. Failed fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor

I'm thinking its the failed FTP sensor since I'm burning more gas then usual. I'm getting 12-14 mpg and I'm used to getting 19-20 mpg

No, the EVAP system has nothing to do with how much fuel is being consumed by the motor. It only monitors how much raw fuel is allowed to evaporate into the atmosphere from the fuel tank.

Lower than normal fuel cunsumption, coupled with evap related codes are commonly caused by a bad fuel pump. I would check fuel pressure at the rail with a guage and see what the readings are Key On/Engine Off (48-55 psi), engine running w/regulator vacuum attached (3-7 psi lower than KO/EO reading), and engine running w/ regulator vacuum disconnected (should be near KO/EO reading or slightly higher).

If fuel pressure checks out, how many miles on your tune-up? Any other codes besides the one mentioned?

I bought the car in June of last year and I haven't done any tune-ups to the car because it still runs fine and is still fast. no other codes came up with the test. Its a 2002 GP GT

If your mileage is approaching or has passed 75k miles, you're due for a tune-up. Check the wires, if they have the cylinder numbers on them they are original and are due. If due, the plugs, wires, fuel filter and pcv valve should be changed.

cylinder numbers...not serial numbers :smile:

just the numbers 1-6 indicating what cylinders the wires are going to....

I checked the wires and they do have the numbers from 1-6 on them so do I need a tune-up? If I need a tune-up then why would the check engine light come on? Is my low gas mileage happening because I need a tune-up.

yeah, i would say that with 74K, your best bet would be to do a tune up, IE- change plugs, wires, fuel filter. your car will probably run alot better. the SES light prolly comes on because it is getting a misfire code from a fouled out plug, or bad wire.

the Original wires are suppose to last 75K, but i recommend doing a tune up every 50K. it'll save lots of hastle.

so try the tune up and see what it does. i'm pretty sure its gonna fix your problem.

The tune-up parts are normal maintenace and you're due, so you won't be wasting money doing the tune-up. You need to check fuel pressure though, as your symptoms point to a bad fuel pump. The fuel pressure sensor is mounted to the fuel pump module assembly. A pinched or cracked vacuum line in the evap system could also cause your symptoms, so you may want to have the car put on a smoke machine which will pinpoint any leaks.
